NATIONAL YEARLING SALE
TBA SALES COMPLEX, GERMISTON
3-5 May 2017
Oh to be a thoroughbred born of nobility refined,
So royal, so proud, so precious, so sound.
Without a shadow of a doubt in the future must lie,
The affections of a master whose passion shall thrive.
With the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale now just around the corner (22-24 April 2015), Bloodstock South Africa have dispatched ‘eagle eyed’ yearling inspectors to farms across South Africa in search of the cream of the Nation’s yearling crop.
“In racing you are only as good as your last best horse.”
- John Freeman
John Freeman’s passion for the Thoroughbred lies in his selection of yearlings at sales, always in search of future sire material. His favourite field remains the syndication and management of stallions. As a selector and buyer of yearlings, his main aim has always been to buy champions and this steady pursuit of excellence has connected him with many of South Africa’s leading sires, including Dynasty.
We were thrilled to have John as a guest to Backworth this weekend past. He was here not only to see the stud, but also to inspect our foals and yearlings. If his reactions were anything to go by… we’d reckon he was impressed!
Miesque’s Approval (USA) - Forbidden Woods (SAF)
Forbidden Woods foaled down in the paddock mid-afternoon Friday, obviously feeling safe and warm, and delivered a lively, healthy filly foal, who seems very interested in everything her Mum does! If her National Emblem yearling filly is anything to go by, this will be a family to watch!

Silvano (GER) - Tsunami (SAF)
Earlier this week we shared with you the news of the arrival of Tsunami’s beautful ‘pure’ black filly foal by King’s Chapel.
NYS Lot 434 Down Sir Down (SAF) (Count Dubois (GB) - Feather Bed (IRE))
Backworth welcomed Dennis and Gilly Drier’s visit to view our draft of Yearlings for the forthcoming Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. They’re seen here inspecting DOWN SIR DOWN (Count Dubois / Feather Bed) with serious catalogue cross-referencing, whilst Backworth Stud Manager Johan Alberts brings out each of our Yearlings for viewing.
“WE ARE WORTH BACKING.”

“WE ARE WORTH BACKING.”
When Colonel Fawcus first laid eyes on the Backworth property in 1902, he must surely have been as taken with the natural beauty of this special place, as we are every day.
With our yearlings running in their paddock and this incredible evening light, I rushed to grab my camera.

“A Backworth yearling goes from strength to strength. They are improvers with time, and that seems to be their strong point!! They get better and better.”
