We may be nearing the peak of our Summer season here in KwaZulu-Natal, but Friday night's racing at Greyville sent chills down a few spines as we once again witnessed the class of a South African stallion great of times past, Western Winter.

In an absolute thriller Friday night at Greyville, the ultra-consistant Tony Rivalland-trained Lucky Break was denied victory in the eighth by a dogged Dancingwithjackson and ultimately the fall of a judge’s hammer.

Not even the driving rain could deter a dogged Athandiwe Mgudlwa from winning the eigth at Greyville Sunday aboard the gutsy Backworth-bred Lucky Break for trainer Tony Rivalland and owner Mary Liley.

Lucky Break, a half brother to Listed Nkosazana Stakes victress, Raise The Bar, is the grandson of Eternal Dancer from the family of Chattaronga.

The four-year-old colt is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

In the previous race, fellow Backworth-bred Down Sir Down (Count Dubois - Feather Bed) contested an extremely tight finish, missing out by a nose to place fourth.

Choisir (AUS) - Prolong (AUS) by Gold Brose (AUS)

Choir Maiden won impressively by 3.2 lengths Sunday for trainer Tony Rivalland under a confident ride from top jockey Anton Marcus.

An Australian import, Backworth races this daughter of Choisir, one of the best young sires in Australia, with our dear friend Mary Liley.

The Coolmore Stud stallion rates consistently among the leading sires in Australia. He was Champion 2-year-old colt of his year and winner of the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at 3. Choisir put Australian thoroughbreds on the map as never before when winning both the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot within 5 days of each other.

Choisir’s leading performers include Starspangledbanner, a dual hemisphere champion, dual Group 1 winner Sacred Choice, 2012 Group 1 winning 2-year-old Choice Bro as well as 2013 Group 1 winner Historian. He is the sire of eleven individual Stakes winners including three exciting 2-year-olds already this season!

This win takes Choir Maiden’s career record to 4 wins and 8 places from 16 starts.

Capping off a solid weekend’s racing for Backworth-breds was the Tony Rivalland-trained Muhtafal colt, Lucky Break, who ran an impressive finish at Clairwood Sunday under Brandon Lerena to break his maiden for owner Mary Liley.

Lucky Break is a half brother to Queen of the Nkosazana Stakes (Listed), Raise The Bar. He is the grandson of Eternal Dancer who had a career tally of 12 wins and is from the family of Chattaronga with 6 wins.

The three-year-old chestnut colt is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

In the 9th, Backworth-bred Gold Flight (Right Approach - Faerie Gold) finished a good 4th, after getting into trouble early, for trainer Alyson Wright under Warren Kennedy.

Lunch with 3A Racing Syndicate and Friends

3A Racing SyndicateEnjoying a beautiful March afternoon at Backworth

The weather this week in KwaZulu-Natal was just beautiful and Backworth is looking quite magnificent at this time of year - not to mention our National Yearling Sales draft which are looking really good too!

We welcomed 3A Racing Syndicate’s James Everett and Wesley Bowman, with their friends Jani Gous and Monique Sonè Maas, to enjoy a fine lunch at the farm on Thursday.

3A Racing is arguably South Africa’s most youthful and vibrant racing syndicate focussing not just on racing and betting but on the social aspect of this fantastic sport too. Wesley’s grandfather was a bookmaker and two of his uncles, Mark and Brett Bowman, are still in the bookmaking game today, but he and Andrew got involved in racing at the age of 13 when a friend’s father invited them to the race track. “We started going to racing on a regular basis, we were lighties - 15 years old - and then we put together a syndicate about four years ago; it just went from there,” says Wesley. “There were just four of us originally, but when people saw us going to the races, suddenly we started growing. We’re now a big bunch of guys and we’re having to turn people away.”

Also visiting were Mary Liley with brother and sister in law Peter and Jenny from the UK, Tony and Sharon Rivalland, Kevin and Alyson Wright, Wendy Whitehead and son Damon, as well as Wendy’s friend Trish Knott and daughter Megan.

We were treated to guest appearances from future Backworth stars; Aquinata (Silvano - Tsunami), Style Flash (Miesque’s Approval - Ramp Model) and Cold Fact (Western Winter - Auburn Annio) to metion a few, before their departure for the 2013 National Yearling Sales in April.

Click here to see a few more photos from a wonderful March day in KZN.

Miesque’s Approval (USA) - Sweet Sweet (AUS)
by Kenmare (FR)

SUGAR RUSH won at Scottsville Tuesday, 3rd time out, breaking her maiden after a 4th and 2nd place, for Tony Rivalland stable, with Brandon Lerena up.

Sugar Rush is by ‘Miesque’s Approval out of a Kenmare mare ‘Sweet Sweet.

It was an exciting moment, as all of us at Backworth had a soft spot for the dam Sweet Sweet! We bought her from Chris Saunders’s Invermooi Stud some time back, after they had struggled through a few seasons to get her in foal. Having produced a good horse ‘Meet at Mala Mala’, we saw a breeding opportunity in her top bloodline, and took the gamble. She conceived to Miesque’s Approval first season for us, producing ‘Sugar Rush’, but through numerous further coverings never conceived again!

Wanting to retain the bloodline for breeding, we race her with friends Gavin Cunningham and Chris Tyson.

It was also encouraging to watch Miesque’s Approval notch up a further winner!

Congratulations to all the connections!
