Although not consignors on the CTS Joburg Ready To Run Sale, we were very impressed with the three Backworth-bred lots presented by Balmoral Stud at the Summerhill gallops.

One of my greatest joys as a racehorse breeder has come from visiting the planet’s great stud farms. Breeders the world over have invested billions of dollars building their shrines to the thoroughbred, and these properties attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. As beautiful as any I’ve had the privilege to know is the Backworth Stud, located in the verdant hills of Mid-Illovo, where they breed horses comparable with the best anywhere. GOLDEN SWORD (GB) - CAR PARK QUEEN (GB)

This time of year is always so rewarding for a Stud Farm as the season’s foals begin to arrive. This handsome youngster is a colt foal by Golden Sword (High Chaparral) out of our British mare Car Park Queen (Zamindar).

Golden Sword,  who stands at Summerhill Stud here in KwaZulu-Natal, was a Graded Stakes winner of four races from 1400m to 2400m, earning in excess of R7million in his racing career. He was a runaway winner of the time honourded Group 3 Chester Vase Came and came within two lengths of the upset of the decade when running World Champion Sea The Stars to the line in the Investec English Derby (Gr 1). In Dubai, he ran the fastest 2000m in that country’s history for internationally acclaimed South African trainer Mike de Kock. Golden Sword’s Sire, High Chaparral, is the first stallion since his own illustrous sire, Sadler’s Wells, to achieve six Group One winners from his first year at stud.

Car Park Queen, is by Gone West’s Juddmonte Farms stallion, Zamindar, Sire of the brilliant Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Zarkava.

Backworth-bred Island Fiesta did little wrong Saturday under jockey MJ Odendaal in the KZN Winter Challenge 1200 at Clairwood, being denied only in a final lunge to the line by the impressive Maine Chance-bred Crescendo, a son of Act One out of the Danehill mare Carambola, and the strapping Summerhill-bred Kahal gelding, Flyfirstclass.

The ultra-consistant Wendy Whitehead-trained son of Miesque’s Approval out of the Australian mare, Bermuda Junction, is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2010 KZN Yearling Sale and takes his career record to 4 wins and 11 places from 20 starts.

KZN BREEDERS RACE DAY
29 June 2014

The much anticipated KZN Breeders Race Day is set to be staged on 29 June 2014 at Clairwood racecourse. The fourth log for ‘three-year-olds and up’ has been published and sees the ultra consistent Backworth-bred Island Fiesta (Miesque’s Approval - Bermuda Junction) fighting out the top spot with the formidable Summerhill Stud-bred Negev (Stronghold - Haifaa).

Bred by Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud, Island Fiesta is trained by Wendy Whitehead and owned by a syndicate including Messrs LR Whiteford, GS Calway, GPW Davis, T de Charmoy, JI Shaw, Sanjeev Ramsewak, Sanjeeth Ramsewak and Miss W Whitehead.

Aptly named Island Fiesta, out of Backworth’s Austalian mare Burmuda Junction, by Is It True (USA), has only been out of the money on three occasions from 17 starts - winning four of them, scoring five seconds and placing five times. Burmuda Junction has produced seven winners from eight runners, including recent Backworth-bred winner by Atso, Bermuda Breeze.

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
Bellwood Cottages
16 November 2013

The annual KZN Breeders Awards takes place once again at the beautiful venue Bellwood Cottages in the KZN Midlands, owned by breeders Willie and Janine Messenger who also happen to have their beautiful Kahal filly Enchanted Kingdom nominated for the event this year. The prestigious Awards evening will take place on Saturday 16 November, 6:00 for 6:30pm.

Once again, the nominees are of a high standard this year and include a number of Group winners and performers - including the first for sire Judpot with Backworth Stud’s (recipient of last year’s Breeding Achievement Award) Colour Of Courage who won the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes, and Admiral’s Eye who place third in a Grade 1 on Vodacom Durban July day for Summerhill Stud’s young Japanese sire Admire Main. Owner Alesh Naidoo has two nominations under the Summerhill banner, with Love Struck and Admiral’s Eye.

KwaZulu-Natal has produced an outstanding crop of two-year-olds; Grade 2 winning Virgo’s Babe stole SA Fillies Nursery by five lengths (bred by Midlands Thoroughbreds) and Princess Julietta by King Of Kings has had two very close and impressive Group performing seconds (bred by Betty and Basil Linington). Julietta stands at Rathmor Stud and has foaled a Kahal, returning to Crusade this season.

Greg Royden-Turner’s Roski-bred Journeyman has been nominated in the Outstanding Two Year Old Colt category, and this young son of Trippi is in quarantine heading to Dubai under the care of champion trainer Mike de Kock. Jimmi Choo, a speedy chestnut colt bred by Cathy and Jonathan Martin of Hadlow Stud, also stands in this category along with Yellow Star’s talented son of Jay Peg, Flash Drive.

As nine time South African champion breeders, Summerhill Stud have a number of entries including Grade 1 SA Classic winner Love Struck and Grade 1 Daily News 2000 second placed No Worries (owned by Brian Burnard). Both are by Kahal.

Kahal who now stands at Bush Hill Stud also features prominently being a champion sire. He has some of the country’s top fillies and mares up for nomination - including the likes of Festival Of Fire (bred by Mr CJ Saunders and Lady O’Reilly), Eastern Greeting (bred by Kjell Foundation), Checcetti (bred by Summerhill) and Enchanted Kingdom (bred by Bellwood Stud).

Gitiano, winner of the KZN Breeders Million Mile this year, has been nominated for Outstanding Middle Distance Male and Outstanding Three Year Old Colt. Bred by Mr Emilio Baseiro, he is a son of Mullins Bay and his dam Poppy Elizabeth has returned to Mullins Bay this season, after foaling a Querari.

Requiem, a son of Danehill who stood for a time at Spring Valley Stud, is the sire of both Jo De Nys’ Rhythmic Roxy and Salutation, both mares up for nomination in the Outstanding Female Stayer category.

Scott Bros have had an outstanding year with their black son of Mogok, The Apache, who seems to be getting better with age. Their nominations include another two sons of Mogok - Meadow Magic who took home the Grade 2 Emerald Cup and Wild One in Outstanding Three Year Old Colt category. They also have the big talented son of Jet Master, E-Jet, nominated for Outstanding Older Male and Outstanding Middle Distance Male. His dam, a grey mare named Esmaltina, now stands at Yellow Star Stud and is owned by Mary Slack of Wilgerbosdrift. She will visit the speedy Kildonan this season.

Seal, the talented staying son of Silvano bred by Dr Ian Heyns born and raised at Bush Hill Stud, is also entered into the category of Outstanding Older Male and Male Stayer.

South African Horseracing Season
2012/13

The entire Backworth team wishes to take this opportunity to congratulate all our Equus Champions for the 2012/13 South African Racing Season!

And what a season it turned out to be with one of the most excting finales in recent history as both the Trainers and Breeders Championships went down to the wire, with jet-setting Mike de Kock and fellow KwaZulu-Natal breeder Summerhill Stud pipping contemporaries Vodacom Durban July victor Sean Tarry and Cape-based Klawervlei Stud repectively.

The International Achievement Award fell to Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint winner, Shea Shea, and the Outstanding Stallion Achievement deservedly went to young stallion sensation, Judpot, standing at Varsfontein Stud in partnership with the internationally renowned Niarchos Family.

Our team also wishes to acknowledge the fine efforts of all connections of Horse of the Year, Variety Club, the wonder miler who was unbeaten in five races over the year including the Grade 1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and the Grade 1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge.

Another fantastic season down… and here’s to an even greater 2013/14!

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
17 November 2012

The KZN Breeders Association held their annual awards on a misty evening at Bellwood Cottages on 17 November to honour the people and Thoroughbreds that have done the industry proud of the past season.

It was an evening that was very well-attended by prominent breeders, owners and trainers alike. It also included an event which brought much fun and amusement into the exciting atmosphere - the inaugural running of the ‘Donkey Derby’ which was won by Bradley McHardy of Quest For Success Pre-training.

Graeme Hawkins, the COO of Gold Circle, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and the KZN Breeders Association Chairman, Koos de Klerk, gave both a welcoming and motivating speech regarding the exciting events that have occurred within the ambit of the KZN Breeders of the past year - as well as giving a hint of exciting prospects and plans for the year ahead.

“I want to extend a personal thank you to the board members of KZN Breeders Club and the effort that each of the members put in for the welfare of the club and breeders in KZN,” said Koos de Klerk. “Thank you too to the sponsors of the awards, it is greatly appreciated. We have had a number of initiatives that have borne fruit and will in future include the KZN Breeders Golf Day and KZN Breeders Million Mile Race Day, KZN Yearling Sales and the R1million race initiated for Vodacom Durban July day which is part of the initiative of our Triple Million Challenge. For a horse that can achieve the treble: winning the R1million race on Vodacom Durban July day, the next year’s Million Mile as a three-year-old and the following year as a four year old, a R1million bonus will be paid. Moving ahead, we will have another six races for R200,000 next year on the KZN Breeders Race Day (incorporating the Million Mile). Further details will be announced very soon - all of which will promote racing and breeding in KZN and we hope to see the results of that. We have already seen the success of the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale. Candiese Marnewick has been appointed as an admin manager and we hope to have her at all sales as well as to brand KZN horses, to promote KZN horses and to promote the Breeders Premium Scheme. We are also looking forward to some serious stallion purchases, starting with the announcement of Crusade.”

Congratulations must go to the winners which saw Dancewiththedevil crowned KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year for a second consecutive year. Breeder, owner and trainer St John Gray was on hand to recieve numerous awards which included Broodmare Of The Year for Emperor’s Dance who resides at Cathy and Jonathan Martin’s Hadlow Stud for St John Gray.

KZN Breeders Stallion Of The Year went to Kahal, owned by Shadwell Stud and now standing at Warwick and Karin Render’s Bush Hill Stud. Kahal was represented with a number of nominees on the evening, in particular he stood out as the sire of every nominee in the category of Outstanding Female Sprinter - won ultimately by Mannequin of Summerhill Stud. Bush Hill Stud took home awards for The Mouseketeer in the category of Outstanding Male Sprinter on behalf of breeder Dr Ian Heyns, as well as for the Bush Hill-stud raised Seal for Outstanding Male Stayer.

Summerhill Stud once again took home the award for Leading Breeder Of The Year and achieved wins in a total of five categories - with Extra Zero, Mannequin and Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje.

Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud won the award for Breeding Achievement. Backworth Stud had achieved an impressive 53% runners to winners ratio over the last racing season. Backworth’s Variometer, nominee for Outstanding Three-Year-Old Sprinter Female and Outstanding Three-Year-Old Filly had gone onto win the Gardenia Listed Handicap the evening before the awards in a very impressive fashion from a strong field of sprinting fillies that included winner of the Outstanding Female Sprinter categoey, Mannequin (bred by Summerhill Stud).

KZN BREEDERS’ AWARDS
25 November 2011

The KZN Breeders Association hosted their annual Awards evening at Bellwood Cottages, Nottingham Road, on Friday 25 November.

Recently-elected Chairman, Koos de Klerk, addressed guests :

“This is a hard act to follow after the work by Warwick Render. I’d like to wish him every success and we’re sad he’s no longer on the board. I’m proud to be here, proud to be associated with this calibre of breeder here at the awards. So much work has gone into putting this event together so well done to the ladies involved, Ashley de Klerk and Linda Norval, for their outstanding work and the organisation that it took to put this event together.

Welcome to the Directors of Gold Circle and thank you for your support of the KZN Breeders and welcome to my fellow breeders.

We are here to honour the achievements of the breeders of thoroughbreds in KZN. How well did we do? If you look at the National Awards, we claimed seven of the 15 Breeder Awards. To those who don’t believe KZN breeds quality horses that can’t compete, don’t forget about the likes of National Champion Breeders, Summerhill Stud, Equus Breeder of the Year, St John Gray, champion Dancewiththedevil, Champion Stallion, the KZN-bred Jet Master, and International achiever Gypsy’s Warning. I think we can slap ourselves on the back. Quite firmly!

There are many initiatives currently taking place to try and get our export market going. There are export opportunities - South Africa’s market share is less than a quarter of a per cent of the international sales of horses and we’re looking to up this by more than 400%. If these initiatives are fruitful, we will be looking forward to a very bright future.

We would like to make the KZN province the breeders’ centre of choice.”

THE SUNCOAST CASINO KZN YEARLING SALE 2011

SUNCOAST CASINO KZN YEARLING SALE
30 June - 1 July 2011

The KZN Yearling Sale was held at the Suncoast Casino in Durban for the first time, and the new venue attracted a number of compliments from buyers and vendors alike. Whilst the sale had mixed results, few voiced anything but praise for the new venue.

The aggregate of R7.802 million was down slightly on last year’s aggregate of R7.793 million, but it is worth noting that the average price of R45,626 was an increase on last year’s average of R43,568. And while the number of horses not sold (61) was up marginally on last year’s total (59), the sales topper (R310,000) was up considerably on last year’s top priced yearling (R210,000).

The Dubai based VIP Thoroughbreds were the top buyers at the sale. They purchased four yearlings for R500,000, at an average price of R125,000. Their top buy was the Mogok colt, Luxardo (Lot 222) out of Absolut Star, consigned by Backworth Stud, whom they bought for R200,000.

Top vendor at the sale, by aggregate, was Boland Stud, who sold all 12 of their yearlings on sale for a total of R960,000. Top vendor, by average, (3 or more yearlings sold) was Backworth Stud. Backworth sold four of their five yearlings for an average price of R108,750.

The top stallion, by aggregate, was Miesque’s Approval. Currently the country’s second leading first crop sire, Miesque’s Approval had 19 of his 22 yearlings sell for R845,000.

Top sire by average (3 or more sold) was Summerhill Stud’s veteran sire, Muhtafal. The stallion had three yearlings sell for R450,000 - at an average price of R150,000.

A full list of results is available at www.tba.co.za.
