Lazy days of winter at Backworth Stud, Eston, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
A horse basks in the suns golden rays, its hide burning like fire while the flame-like sun causes the tawny lades of grass to throw long shadows outward along the parched ground. The once turquoise sky is now painted with rose, violet, and cadmium making the heavens look like a great pastel canvas.
We welcomed esteemed journalist and writer of the turf, Sarah Whitelaw, to Backworth Stud last week.
The scenery of the Southern KZN Midlands is a sight to behold in the late Autumn. This past weekend, we welcomed friends to the farm for an Autumn luncheon set in Backworth's magical gardens. A wonderfully relaxed afternoon combining light wines, fine dining and super company was enjoyed by all.
Backworth Stud – the 'Jewel of Eston' is a quality operation that breeds well-conformed, sound and quality thoroughbred individuals who are a pleasure to work with.
My father often told me “Do it right or don’t do it at all!” At Backworth they do it right - professional and passionate with the horse at heart. They are certainly worth backing. - Gary Grant / Equine Group
Backworth Stud is a subliminally beautiful property. Standing proud at 1,100m above sea level, the estate boasts 360⁰ of uninterrupted views across the breathtaking Southern KwaZulu-Natal Midlands... even our Scotties and Dillyn's Whippet dog think so.

Backworth Stud’s time honoured philosophy of quality and genuine value makes them a leader on my sales checklist. Good-boned youngsters that are not over-prepared, and hailing from high-class families, are a great starting point for any prospective buyer. - Dean Kannemeyer / Leading Trainer of Classic Winners

One of my greatest joys as a racehorse breeder has come from visiting the planet’s great stud farms. Breeders the world over have invested billions of dollars building their shrines to the thoroughbred, and these properties attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. As beautiful as any I’ve had the privilege to know is the Backworth Stud, located in the verdant hills of Mid-Illovo, where they breed horses comparable with the best anywhere. Mick Goss / Summerhill Stud CEO
With the 2015 racing season now well under way, the latest Sporting Post Breeders’ Statistics reflect Backworth Stud’s percentage of ‘Winners to Runners’ surpassing an impressive 48%.
“Backworth has 46 mares being covered this season”
Backworth Stud got off to a good start to the season yesterday with 2 mares being covered in KwaZulu-Natal and 3 in the Cape, and more bookings for today.
It’s an exciting year for Backworth ahead, and with a confident belief that the Thoroughbred and Racing industry is moving forward, we have taken a calculated and strategic approach to an upgrade in the Broodmare band over the past year. With an aggressive investment in stallion shares, and bookings to a profiled selection of proven and exciting new Stallion prospects, Backworth has 46 mares being covered this season.
From the KwaZulu-Natal selection we are obviously supporting champion sire Kahal, stalwart Mogok, A.P. Answer and Torreador… and then new to the barn, Irish Flame, Byword, Crusade and Await The Dawn. We’re also supporting promising sire King’s Chapel, where his yearlings on the ground look very racy.
We have sent 14 mares down to the Western Cape, to board at Winterbach Stud, and they’ll be visiting super-sire Var, Champion Freshman sire Judpot, Gimmethegreenlight, new boy What A Winter, and exciting new prospect in South Africa, Oratorio!
‘Best Wishes’ to all fellow breeders for a magnificent season ahead!
To our buyers and bidders, the underbidders and the brave hearted, and those who traipsed the TBA Sale Grounds in pursuit of their racy thoroughbred - ‘Thank You’ for your participation and support!
At Backworth we continually strive to raise the profile of our stock, our Stud and our relationships, and we hope that our 2011 Vintage offered at this year’s National Sale, proves that we were worth backing!
The week ended well with our sales average up, our turnover up, and with great performances from our 2010 Vintage purchased at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sales, we give thanks and toast ‘Colour of Courage’s (Judpot / Exclusive Honour) victory in the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes for trainer Mike Miller, and to ‘Dazzle’ (Muhtafal / Lady Electric) breaking her maiden in emphatic style for trainer Glen Kotzen.
We look forward to meeting again - on the track, in the auction ring, and through continuing industry interaction.
