Not even the driving rain could deter a dogged Athandiwe Mgudlwa from winning the eigth at Greyville Sunday aboard the gutsy Backworth-bred Lucky Break for trainer Tony Rivalland and owner Mary Liley.

Lucky Break, a half brother to Listed Nkosazana Stakes victress, Raise The Bar, is the grandson of Eternal Dancer from the family of Chattaronga.

The four-year-old colt is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

In the previous race, fellow Backworth-bred Down Sir Down (Count Dubois - Feather Bed) contested an extremely tight finish, missing out by a nose to place fourth.

Goldkeeper (USA) - Moving On Up (SAF) by Jallad (USA)

The Paul Matchett-trained 5-year-old mare, Raise The Bar (Goldkeeper - Moving On Up), scored a thrilling victory in the Woodland Sprint on sand at the Vaal Thursday. She got up in the dying strides to win on the line from Summer Speedsters winner, Solarium (Var - Red Remedy); going one better in this R125,000 event than a year ago, where she finished a closing second to eventual Banyana Handicap (Listed) winner, Sapphire Ring (Spectrum - Star Sapphire).

Now approaching the twilight of her career, Raise The Bar has been a super performer for her R230,000 purchase price from the 2009 KZN Yearling Sale. Her career record now stands at 8 wins and 14 places from 32 starts, with earnings in excess of R800,000.

Our congratulations go to owner Mr John Koumides as well as to trainer Paul Matchett and his team.

“You want me to do what?”…only one day old and already a character!

This is Moving On Up’s delightful filly foal by Atso which she delivered on the weekend.

Moving On Up is also the dam of Raise The Bar (Goldkeeper (USA)) who has an impressive racing career to date with 6 wins over 1000m - 1450m including the Nkosazana Stakes (L) and 12 places including a 2nd in the Queen Of The Sand (L) for earnings in excess of R520,000.

early thanksgiving rss

“We really are celebrating an early Thanksgiving this year!”

We looked at the Sporting Post statistics for the 2011-2012 season, and have to say how proud we are. From just 37 runners, Backworth Stud ended up in 30th place on the National Log with R2,272,386 earnings, and from there 1st position in Places to Runners of 38%, 2nd position Winners to Runners of 54%, and 8th position with and AEPR of R61,416.

But on closer analysis, one acknowledges there is much more to give thanks for! And that is to all the players in this incredible game - it is a privilege to be a part of it.

We start by celebrating the horse, this amazing animal that leaves us in daily wonder. So, in acknowledging performance, we need to congratulate trainers, where Paul Matchett’s ‘Raise The Bar’ (Gold Keeper / Moving On Up) was our biggest contributing earner, closely contested by Herman Brown trained ‘Chocolicious’ (Kahal/Candy Box), Louis Goosen’s ‘Variometer’ (Var/Lady Electric), Lucky Houdalakis’ ‘Glitter Star’ (Muhtafal/Celestial Charm), Brian Wiid’s Varlet (Var/Miss Unimac ) and Ivan Moore’s ‘Devonella’ (Kahal/Devon-Sent) to name a few.

There were the jockeys who were a part in achieving this great Win and Place statistic, and Anton Marcus rode his 200th victory on Backworth-bred Glitter Star, helping him achieve top Jockey position with 205 wins.

But life isn’t just about performance! It’s about knowing the rules, and playing the game fairly, it’s about integrity, it’s about trust, it’s about embracing your fellows, and respecting everyone’s right to earn an honest living. It is also about support - and for that we are certainly fortunate. We’ve witnessed a growing loyalty from owners, trainers, pre-trainers, vets and interest groups, who see the value in a Backworth-bred. We appreciate the dedication, concern and professionalism of our Stud vet and farrier. We enjoy the sporting challenge from our fellow breeders, the cooperation of the stallion owners, the insurers, the transporters, the feed company, the advertising agency, the bank, the racing companies, auction houses, Tellytrack, and all the partnerships that bring this business together. We are forever grateful for the underbidders at sales, the competition on the race track, and the thrill and stress of the auctions. It is all the amazing new people we continually meet, and who share (or respect) this obsession! It is the visitors to the Stud. And then, there are the friends and family, with their perennial, evergreen commitment and interest in Backworth.

We like to think we can factor in an elusive, mystery ‘soul’ factor to our Backworth-breds. It is what has brought us to where we are, and it is many things. It’s the committed passion of the team on the farm, who are as much the face of our business as are our horses in the training yards around the country. It’s the hours spent pouring over pedigrees and planning matings. It is that resilience to ride out on the challenging tracks livestock breeding puts you through. It’s making business decisions that defy fiscal logic! It’s the tedious admin. It’s the gentle relationships with the mares and horses on the farm. It’s dreaming of the potential in a foal. It’s the natural beauty of the environment we breed in, the winds that blow through our fields, the sun that shines on our paddocks, and the mists that shroud us in mystery. It’s believing in what we do. It’s Scotty dogs, it’s our treasured home and it’s where our hearts are. It is all of this, and we continue to be absolutely passionate about all things Backworth!

We write from Eston, end August, seven beautiful foals on the ground, fifteen to go, and with the recent settling rains, there is that wonderful promise of spring in the air.

So whilst giving “thanks” for our 2011-2012 Breeding Year, with the benchmarks of Frankel and Black Caviar on the table, we take on the 2012-2013 Breeding Year with a renewed vigour!

Yes, Thanksgiving has come early for Backworth!

Keith and Ian

Backworth-bred Cape Town Princess (Miesque’s Approval - Moving On Up) broke her maiden second time out at Durbanville Wednesday under a controlled ride by jockey Karl Neisius for trainer Dean Kannemeyer. She showed plenty of toe and was just off the leaders coming to the top of the home stretch before Neisius sent her for home with 300m to go. From there, Cape Town Princess never looked like losing and took a solid win from Ruby Sunset (AUS) (Host (Chi)) in second and Hickory Hill (Windrush) in third.

Congratulations to owner Lady Christine Laidlaw.

Cape Town Princess is a half-sister to feature race winning filly, Raise The Bar (SAF) (Goldkeeper - Moving On Up) and is by Breeders Cup’ winner Miesque’s Approval (USA) out of the Jallad (USA) mare Moving On Up (SAF). The Paul Matchett-trained 4-year-old filly, Raise The Bar (SAF) (Goldkeeper (USA) - Moving On Up (SAF)), had stepped onto the Vaal sand track nine times in her career prior to Tuesday; for 3 wins and 5 places.

Sitting on the rail at the back of the pack under the experienced Marthinus Mienie, Raise The Bar had it all to do coming into the final straight. With 300m to go, Ugly Betty (ARG) (Mutakddim (USA)) surged to the fore with Raise The Bar and Sapphire Ring (SAF) (Spectrum (IRE)) in hot pursuit. With 150m to go, it was all over as Raise The Bar surged clear to win going away by 2.5 lengths from Ugly Betty and Shattered Image (SAF) (Damage Is Done (SAF)).

Our congratulations go to owner Mr John Koumides as well as to trainer Paul Matchett and his team.

Goldkeeper (USA) - Moving On Up (SAF) by Jallad (USA)

Prior to her thrilling win yesterday at the Vaal, Raise The Bar, the Backworth-bred four-year-old daughter of Goldkeeper, had contested three successive Conditions Plates at the same track since a layoff and had placed in all of them; finishing fourth, third and second respectively.

In her first run back over the 1200m sand track, where she was drawn widest of all in an 11-strong field, never a good position in races over 1200m, 1450m and 1600m, she did well to finish five lengths behind Mina Salaam.

Her penultimate start was also over 1200m and she had to jump from stall No 9 - also not a great draw - and she finished three lengths in arrears of Follow The Piper.

Last Thursday she lined up in an event over 1000m in which Hidden Beauty looked a standout bet. That proved to be the case, but Raise The Bar did manage to finish a 3.75-length second.

This time around Raise The Bar drew No 3 over her best distance and carried 60.5kg.

Raise The Bar is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2009 KZN Yearling Sale.

What a week for Backworth-bred racehorses on the tracks
of South Africa and Mauritius.

Blingle Bells won at the Vaal.
Princely Reason won in Mauritius.
Devonella came close 2nd at Clairwood.
Step It Up ran 2nd at Clairwood.
Raise The Bar ran 4th at Greyville.
Plush ran 3rd at Greyville… running 300m less due to light failure!!

“With a week’s race results like that, on our small number
of horses running, we are worth backing at the
Suncoast Casino KZN Yearling Sale.”

Goldkeeper (USA) - Moving On Up by Jallad (USA)

The Backworth-bred duo of Raise The Bar (Gold Keeper (USA) - Moving On Up) and Blingle Bells (Parade Leader (USA) - September Bells) did us proud in the third race at the Vaal yesterday when notching up a convincing one/two.

Congratulations to trainers Paul Matchett (Raise The Bar) and Leon Erasmus (Blingle Bells).

Raise The Bar is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2009 KZN Yearling Sale.
