As the Johannesburg dusk settled Tuesday evening at Turffontein Racecourse, all focus was on the rippling racing machines strutting their stuff in the parade ring; in the air hovered a buzz of excited chatter, papers shuffling and uncertain whispers.

In an absolute thriller Friday night at Greyville, the ultra-consistant Tony Rivalland-trained Lucky Break was denied victory in the eighth by a dogged Dancingwithjackson and ultimately the fall of a judge’s hammer.

King’s Chapel (NZ) - Flutter Bye (SAF)

Just when we thought this year’s crop couldn’t get any better, our Labeeb mare Flutter Bye preseneted us with this strapping colt foal by Bush Hill Stud Sire, King’s Chapel.

King’s Chapel is a magnificent looking stallion with size, substance and quality, and he is beautifully balanced. He was a ten time winner in New Zealand and Australia, including 3 wins at Group 1 level. He was crowned a multiple Champion as a three-year-old in New Zealand, winning the Champion Sprint/Miler title, Champion Three-Year-Old title and Horse Of The Year title.

His impressive race record included victories in the Super Bonus Classique (L) (1200m) at two, the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr1) (1600m), the Telegraph Handicap (Gr1) (1200m), the WFA Stakes (Gr1) (1400m) and the Ray Coupland Stakes (L) (1400m) at three.

Flutter Bye’s first dam, Going Places, is a half sister to Spathi and First Movement; and is the dam of 8 foals; 8 runners; 6 winners including Ipi Tombe Challenge (Gr2) victress FIRST AGAIN by Muhtafal.

We’re certainly going to be keeping an eye on this fellow’s career.

Not even the driving rain could deter a dogged Athandiwe Mgudlwa from winning the eigth at Greyville Sunday aboard the gutsy Backworth-bred Lucky Break for trainer Tony Rivalland and owner Mary Liley.

Lucky Break, a half brother to Listed Nkosazana Stakes victress, Raise The Bar, is the grandson of Eternal Dancer from the family of Chattaronga.

The four-year-old colt is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

In the previous race, fellow Backworth-bred Down Sir Down (Count Dubois - Feather Bed) contested an extremely tight finish, missing out by a nose to place fourth.

Muhtafal (USA) - Moving On Up by Jallad (USA)

Capping off a solid weekend’s racing for Backworth-breds was the Tony Rivalland-trained Muhtafal colt, Lucky Break, who ran an impressive finish at Clairwood Sunday under Brandon Lerena to break his maiden for owner Mary Liley.

Lucky Break is a half brother to Queen of the Nkosazana Stakes (Listed), Raise The Bar. He is the grandson of Eternal Dancer who had a career tally of 12 wins and is from the family of Chattaronga with 6 wins.

The three-year-old chestnut colt is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

In the 9th, Backworth-bred Gold Flight (Right Approach - Faerie Gold) finished a good 4th, after getting into trouble early, for trainer Alyson Wright under Warren Kennedy.

The classy Backworth-bred Caviar (Var / Lewinsky’s Lover) won convincingly under MJ Odendaal at Clairwood Sunday, carrying top weight over a speedy 1200m.

This win takes the smart filly’s career record to 4 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds from 12 starts; and kicks off what promises to be a ‘Caviar & Champagne’ year ahead for Backworth-breds.

Congratulations to Summerveld-based trainer Colin Scott and owners Rob Scott and the Two Oceans Racing Syndicate.

Caviar is from the family of Soho Secret; ARCSA Champion Broodmare in 1995, Kings Gambit; Equus Champion Stayer in 2008, London News; ARCSA Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and Horse of The Year in 1995 and Champion Older Male and Horse Of The Year in 1996, and Promisefrommyheart; Equus Champion Three-Year-Old Classic Female in 2004.

Ready To Run Sale 2013... take note of Lady Matic!

ready to run sale 2013 lady matic rss

TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park
1/3 November 2013

When Bloodstock South Africa announced the world-class catalogue late September for the 2013 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, kicking off Friday at the TBA’s Germiston Sales Complex, we must admit to the Backworth Team secretly rooting for a special filly very  close to our own hearts… lot number 207 consigned by Balmoral Stud.

There’s a story behind Lady Matic, the imposing Backworth-bred bay filly by Muhtafal out of our Australian mare, Miss Unimac. She was consigned by Backworth to the 2013 National Yearling Sales where she was spotted, selected, and quickly snapped up, by KZN-Midlands-based Balmoral Stud with the aim of nurturing her further in preparation for the Ready To Run Sale which carries the world’s richest Ready To Run Sales race, limited to graduates of the sale, the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup. With an expected 2014 stake in the region of R3.5million, making ‘The Cup’ one of the biggest prizes in the country, thes odds for a true, quality candidate are irresistible.

Lady Matic is a half sister to PRIVATE COLLECTION (5 wins), MACFIRE (5 wins), MACMUFTI (6 wins), CHIC HAPPENS (3 wins) and VARLET (5 wins). She is from the family of LOTKAS STAR (AUS), the joint 3rd Top Rated 3-Year-Old Female Miler in Australia with 5 wins including Grade 2 Storm Queen Stakes, CABOTEUR (13 wins) and WIND JAMMER (9 wins including Grace 3 Administrative Trophy). her dam, MISS UNIMAC, is a half sister to MARIONIQUE (AUS), dam of LADY MARION (8 wins including the Grade 2 Marsh Classic Stakes, the Grade 2 Tristarc Stakes, the Grade 3 WH Stocks Stakes) and LARGO LAD (AUS) (6 wins).

So if you’re attending the 2013 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, be sure to take note of lot 207, Lady Matic.

First Again Comes Full Circle

Muhtafal (USA) - Going Places (ZIM)

Keith Russon celebrates a significant moment, pictured here with First Again, our first Backworth-bred Graded winner, behind which there is a much ‘bigger picture’.

The granddaughter of Keith’s foundation mare ‘Top Drawer’ (Princillon / Windsor Chimes) from his Cloud’s End Stud in Zimbabwe back in the ’80s, Keith has continually, and sentimentally, believed in the family. From here he bred ‘Going Places’ (Esplendor / Top Drawer), who he later bought back, to bring to Backworth Stud when we started breeding in South Africa, in partnership with John and Janette Bescoby. In her short breeding career, Going Places bred well for us, most notably ‘First Again’ who we raced together with stalwart Backworth supporters Stephan and Anne Colle - enjoying 8 wins, topped with the Grade 2 Ipi Tombe Challenge victory, and numerous places, and the highest Merit Rated Filly of her generation.

When we dissolved our breeding partnership with John and Janette Bescoby in 2006, they bought us out of First Again, to send her to stud for themselves. She struggled in breeding, with only 2 Daylami foals, and had developed a strong dislike for being covered! John and Janette very kindly offered her back to Backworth earlier this year, and in consultation with our Stud Vet, Carla Langley, planned a special programme intergrating her back in to the ‘breeding concept’ letting her run with breeding warmbloods, and with a constant exposure to Stallions.

It was with much anticipation, that First Again visited new KwaZulu-Natal sire ‘Irish Flame’ recently. With a supporting team of Carla, Keith and Farm Manager Dillyn Brijlall to witness the moment, and together with the participation of the Stallion Manager, Warwick Render of Bush Hill Stud, all were there to witness what turned out to be a participative mating. 30 days later, she is ‘Tested in Foal’, and we hope for the delivery of ‘something special’!

Thanks to everybody involved - it is in recording these stories that a romance is brought back in to the science of breeding!

Tremendous Treble for Backworth

Too Much Fun HorseToo Much Fun (Admire Main - Merriment)

Below is an article published yesterday on the Bloodstock South Africa website following Backworth’s ‘tremendous treble’ on the weekend with the Duncan McKenzie-trained Spectacularus, the Gavin van Zyl-trained Too Much Fun and the Frank Robinson-trained Go Again!

“The Backworth Stud has enjoyed a cracking start to the 2013-2014 season. The farm who have been loyal and stalwart Bloodstock South Africa supporters over the years, enjoyed a fine treble over the weekend.

The first leg of the Backworth hatrick kicked off when Spectacularus broke her maiden in fine fashion on Friday. A daughter of former Eclipse Champion Miesque’s Approval, Spectacularus was a cheap R25,000 buy at the 2011 Suncoast Casino KZN Yearling Sale. Well done to owners Backworth Stud, and Messrs Levy and Rivalland - this filly has already earned back her purchase price!

Second of the Backworth winners to score over the weekend was the Admire Main-sired filly, Too Much Fun. The Winston Chow owned filly showed her appreciation for a step up in trip by saluting impressively over 1600m, and she is another who should win her share of races.

Too Much Fun (whose dam Merriment is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Superwood) was a R140,000 buy at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. She is a filly with a lovely pedigree (Too Much Fun is from the great Soho Secret family), and hopefully she can go from strength to strength.

Go Again completed the hatrick for Backworth with a brave victory at Clairwood Park on Sunday. The Frank Robinson-trained gelding (who is a full brother to smart, Grade 2 winning filly First Again) narrowly prevailed in a thrilling finish to win by the shortest of short heads for his connections. The son of Muhtafal was a R600,000 buy for owner Mr Bifov at the 2011 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

Bloodstock South Africa would like to congratulate Backworth’s Keith Russon and Ian Todd for this fine achievement.

Variometer Dazzles on KZN Breeders Race Day

Clairwood, 30 June 2013

The KZN Breeders raceday at Clairwood Sunday went down a rip-roaring success.

Headlined by the extremely competitive R1million KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Million Mile, it was evident on the day that increased sales profiling and lip service of the past few years had come to fruition!

From a Backworth perspective, we had two runners on the day; two half-sisters out of our Hennessey mare Lady Electric - Variometer by Var and Dazzle by Muhtafal.

To our delight, the pair ran an impressive 1st and 2nd in the R200,000 Midlands Thoroughbreds KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1200 for trainers Louis Goosen and Glen Kotzen respectively.

The Summerhill Stud-bred Selborne Supremecy (Kahal - Selborne Park) took honours for trainer Sean Tarry in the Backworth Stud-sponsored R200,000 KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1900.

Prior to Colour Of Courage’s fantastic victory the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes at Scottsville Sunday, Backworth had already scored in the first with Dazzle, a graduate of the 2011 KZN Yearling Sale, romping home to an impressive 4 length maiden win under jockey Anton Marcus for trainer Glen Kotzen.

The performance of the three-year-old filly was just the ‘cherry on the top’ for her owner Tony Moodley, following his Grade 2 success on Champions Day at Turffontein Saturday with Checcetti clinching the Bisquit Cognac Gerald Rosenberg Stakes.

Dazzle, by Muhtafal out of Lady Electric, is a half-sister to fellow-Backworth-bred Stakes winner Variometer. She has now won once and placed twice in her three starts.
