Backworth had a good day’s racing at Scottsville Tuesday with GO AGAIN (Muhtafal - Going Places) winning second time out for the Herman Brown / Frank Robinson yard; beating the hot favourite, Markus Jooste’s talented Trippi colt, Skywalk Luke (Trippi - Catwalk Cutie), by a length.

The Backworth graduate of the 2011 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale is a full brother to First Again, winner of the 2006 Ipi Tombe Challenge (Grade 2) and the highest merit rated filly of her generation (MR106). Congratulations to the Brown/Robinson yard and to owner Mr R. Bifov.

In the 3rd race on the same card, Backworth-bred SUGAR RUSH (Miesque’s Approval - Sweet Sweet) ran 2nd, also second time out, for trainer Tony Rivalland, beaten by the Dennis Drier-trained favourite, Sue For Peace (Western Winter - Divided).

On Monday at Clairwood, LUXARDO (Mogok - Absolut Star) ran 4th, first time out, over 1000m. A commendable run considering he was left at the start.

Avontuur Farm’s resident stallion Var had a remarkable past weekend reports the Sporting Post :

The Var syndicate’s own sponsored race, the R150,000 Gold Rush Sprint over 1100m at Turffontein, was won by 3-year-old gelding Timeofreckoning. Bred by Zenzele Stud out of the Fine Edge mare Thin Air, the 3-year-old scored his third win from five starts. He is trained by Charles Laird, and races in the colours of Ingrid and Markus Jooste. Timeofreckoning was a R350,000 National Sale yearling.

Half an hour earlier, the R135,000 Listed Ruffian Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, over 1000m at the same track, had fallen prey to Variometer. This chestnut daughter of Var races for a large syndicate of owners, and is trained by Louis Goosen. Bred by Backworth Stud, out of Australian-bred Hennesy mare Lady Electric, she’d been a R140,000 Natal Yearling Sale purchase. Variometer is Var’s sixth individual stakes winner.

Meanwhile, at Durbanville in the Cape, Var’s daughter Variety Club retained her unbeaten record when winning a Juvenile Plate, carrying top-weight. Another to race in the Jooste-colours, Variety Club is out of Secret Prospector mare La Massine, and is half sister to multiple Mauritian stakes winner Rhythmically. She had been a R425,000 Vintage Yearling Sale purchase.

Var is currently South Africa’s leading sire of 2-year-old by stakes and stands at Avontuur Farm.
