Clairwood, 30 June 2013

The KZN Breeders raceday at Clairwood Sunday went down a rip-roaring success.

Headlined by the extremely competitive R1million KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Million Mile, it was evident on the day that increased sales profiling and lip service of the past few years had come to fruition!

From a Backworth perspective, we had two runners on the day; two half-sisters out of our Hennessey mare Lady Electric - Variometer by Var and Dazzle by Muhtafal.

To our delight, the pair ran an impressive 1st and 2nd in the R200,000 Midlands Thoroughbreds KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1200 for trainers Louis Goosen and Glen Kotzen respectively.

The Summerhill Stud-bred Selborne Supremecy (Kahal - Selborne Park) took honours for trainer Sean Tarry in the Backworth Stud-sponsored R200,000 KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1900.

Variometer Electrifies Gardenia Handicap Speed Queens

Var (USA) - Lady Electric (AUS)

There was no hanging about in Friday evening’s R135,000 Listed Gardenia Handicap run over 1000m at Turffontein. The speed queens were at full throttle from the jump.

The gallant speed mare Mannequin came out carrying top-weight of 62,5kgs, and while she failed to register her thirteenth victory, she was hardly disgraced when finishing in third; just under a length behind the year younger Variometer.

Anton Marcus rode a top-class race when producing the Louis Goosen-trained flyer at the right moment inside the final 200m to register a heartstopping win.

The race panned out perfectly for the champion jockey as the Mike Azzie-trained super-quick La Volta dashed off to lead the enthusiastic mare Mannequin, with Three Nations and Miss Cantona in hot pursuit.

Marcus worked Variometer through as Mannequin challenged La Volta late, and in a nailbiting drive to the wire Variometer edged ahead to win by a short head in a time of 56,72secs.

Goosen’s shrewd move in fitting the blinkers to a filly endowed with plenty of natural speed was just the tonic required to change the place cheque scenario into something far more rewarding. She is also a far better filly on the turf.

The Backworth Stud product Variometer, is out of the Australian- bred Hennessy mare, Lady Electric, who won once over 1000m from just 2 starts.

Variometer is now a winner of 5 of her 17 starts, with 7 places for stake earnings of R469,675. She cost R140,000 at the KZN Yearling Sale.

All her victories have been recorded over 1000m and this was her third Listed win after the Ruffian Stakes as a 2-year-old, and the Bauhinia Handicap in her 3-year-old season.

Variometer is always worth following over the minimum chop and should make a lovely broodmare in time to come.

Speedy three-year-old chestnut filly, Variometer, took a perfectly timed three-quarter length victory, carrying top weight, in the Bauhinia Handicap (Listed) over 1000m on Turffontein’s old course last night. ‘Precision’ jockey, Piere Strydom, presented the Louis Goosen-trained daughter of Var 200m out before she charged away in the final 100m from Jolly Poppins, Three Nations, Extra Zero and Princess Rue.

Variometer is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2010 KZN Yearling Sale and this win takes her career record to 4 wins and 3 place from 10 starts.

Herman Brown Jnr and Louis GoosenVariometer and Chocolicious knocking on the door for trainers Louis Goosen and Herman Brown…

Backworth-breds have been knocking on the Graded and Listed race doors recently with a return to form for both Chocolicious and Variometer!

In November at Turffontein, Variometer (Var (USA) - Lady Electric (Aus) by Hennessy) ran a convincing 2nd to Waywest Goddess (Way West (AUS) - Gallic Goddess by Gallic League (IRE)) in the Gardenia Handicap (Listed) setting up a tremendous 1-2 for trainer Louis Goosen.

This past weekend saw Chocolicious (Kahal (GB) - Candy Box by Exclusive Patriot (USA)) missing out by half a length in the Magnolia Handicap (Grade 3) at Turffontein for trainer Herman Brown Jnr; conceding 6kgs to the winner Jackodore (Toreador (IRE) - I’m Alright Jack by Shoe Danzig (USA)).

Variometer takes her career record to 2 wins and 1 place from 6 starts while Chocolicious takes hers to 2 wins and 7 places from 9 starts.

“When it comes to a stud farm, my two vital tests must be passed, for me to buy from that farm again. The first is how the horse’s bone stands up to training and the second is whether the horse holds condition, once in my yard. I don’t have time for soft boned horses. Any fool can fatten a horse up for a sale. Once that fool has walked away, the trainer watches the “puncture”, as the horse fades away.

I am pleased to confirm that Backworth horses have good bone and thrive in my yard. I will be back!

When you can’t beat them, join them! After running second to Backworth-bred Chocolicious in the 2010 Grade 1 Allan Robertson, it was a no-brainer for me - I went out and bought Variometer from Backworth.

There are 600 horses on this year’s National Yearling Sale. I won’t look at them all. But, I will be looking at the 11 Backworth horses in Block G - That’s a racing certainty!”

Avontuur Farm’s resident stallion Var had a remarkable past weekend reports the Sporting Post :

The Var syndicate’s own sponsored race, the R150,000 Gold Rush Sprint over 1100m at Turffontein, was won by 3-year-old gelding Timeofreckoning. Bred by Zenzele Stud out of the Fine Edge mare Thin Air, the 3-year-old scored his third win from five starts. He is trained by Charles Laird, and races in the colours of Ingrid and Markus Jooste. Timeofreckoning was a R350,000 National Sale yearling.

Half an hour earlier, the R135,000 Listed Ruffian Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, over 1000m at the same track, had fallen prey to Variometer. This chestnut daughter of Var races for a large syndicate of owners, and is trained by Louis Goosen. Bred by Backworth Stud, out of Australian-bred Hennesy mare Lady Electric, she’d been a R140,000 Natal Yearling Sale purchase. Variometer is Var’s sixth individual stakes winner.

Meanwhile, at Durbanville in the Cape, Var’s daughter Variety Club retained her unbeaten record when winning a Juvenile Plate, carrying top-weight. Another to race in the Jooste-colours, Variety Club is out of Secret Prospector mare La Massine, and is half sister to multiple Mauritian stakes winner Rhythmically. She had been a R425,000 Vintage Yearling Sale purchase.

Var is currently South Africa’s leading sire of 2-year-old by stakes and stands at Avontuur Farm.
