Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale 2016
Backworth-bred Humidor made it 4 wins from just 6 starts when powering home in the Middle Stakes over 1200m at Scottsville Wednesday for trainer Tony Rivalland with maestro Anton Marcus up.
On her Poly debut over a distance a little short of optimal, the Backworth-bred Reigning Wave, came from behind to wash her opposition away, scoring an emphatic win in the process for trainer Paul Gadsby with Brandon Lerena up. Congratulations to owner Mr Henk Nel from Thor Insurance Brokers.
Whilst we desperately await the start of the rainy season here in KwaZulu-Natal, there was no dampening the spirits of our Backworth-breds Sunday, as they blitzed the Scottsville turf in scintillating fashion.
Although not consignors on the CTS Joburg Ready To Run Sale, we were very impressed with the three Backworth-bred lots presented by Balmoral Stud at the Summerhill gallops.
The Yvette Bremner-trained Thrill Factor continued to live up to her name Friday at Fairview, scorching her competition to win by an emphatic four lengths for owners Messrs Gorgulho and Van Huyssteen with jockey Gift Funeka up.
Backworth-bred mare, Step It Up (Windrush - Moving On Up) tore up the Flamingo Park sand track Monday to score a decisive 3.75 length win for trainer Bill Human and owners the Steamers Syndicate with jockey Wes Marwing up.
King’s Chapel (NZ) - Flutter Bye (SAF)
Just when we thought this year’s crop couldn’t get any better, our Labeeb mare Flutter Bye preseneted us with this strapping colt foal by Bush Hill Stud Sire, King’s Chapel.
King’s Chapel is a magnificent looking stallion with size, substance and quality, and he is beautifully balanced. He was a ten time winner in New Zealand and Australia, including 3 wins at Group 1 level. He was crowned a multiple Champion as a three-year-old in New Zealand, winning the Champion Sprint/Miler title, Champion Three-Year-Old title and Horse Of The Year title.
His impressive race record included victories in the Super Bonus Classique (L) (1200m) at two, the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr1) (1600m), the Telegraph Handicap (Gr1) (1200m), the WFA Stakes (Gr1) (1400m) and the Ray Coupland Stakes (L) (1400m) at three.
Flutter Bye’s first dam, Going Places, is a half sister to Spathi and First Movement; and is the dam of 8 foals; 8 runners; 6 winners including Ipi Tombe Challenge (Gr2) victress FIRST AGAIN by Muhtafal.
We’re certainly going to be keeping an eye on this fellow’s career.

Suncoast Casino, Durban, South Africa
3-4 July 2014
The Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale (scheduled to be held this year on 3rd and 4th July) has a rich history of producing outstanding, yet affordable racehorses… its most famous graduate being recent SASCOC Triple Crown winner (only the second horse in history win the series), Louis The King.
Bred by The Alchemy, Louis The King was a R55,000 bargain buy at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale and has earned over R5 million to date. The Vodacom Durban July hopeful’s sire Black Minnaloushe will be strongly represented on the 2014 KZN Yearling with nine well bred yearlings on offer.
Louis The King is not the only top-class performer to have been offered at this sale however. The likes of Happy Valentine (Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship), Colour of Courage (Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes), Go Indigo (Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas), Knock On Wood (Gr3 London News Stakes, 2nd Gr1 Champion Challenge) and Seal (Gr1 SA Derby) have all been offered at previous KZN Yearling Sales, and have all proved great bargain buys.
This year’s catalogue looks to have something for everyone. Top sires with yearlings on offer include Captain Al, Fort Wood, Judpot, Kahal, Silvano, Trippi and Var.
Other proven sires represented on sale include Antonius Pius, Ashaawes, Count Dubois, Horse Chestnut, Jay Peg, Mogok, Muhtafal and Windrush.

Held at the Suncoast Casino in Durban, the KZN Yearling Sale is not a sale that any serious buyer can afford to miss! For more information on this sale and the catalogue, please contact the TBA office on +27 (11) 323 5700 or visit their website - www.tba.co.za.
Editor’s note : Backworth Stud consigns a quality draft of yearlings to the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale including the progeny of A.P. Answer, Miesque’s Approval, King’s Chapel, Horse Chestnut and National Emblem.
It is always a relief when the last foal of the season is born, where Miss Unimac delivered a beautiful A.P. Answer colt.
Even more exciting for the foals, was our first full sunny day in what seems like months. Here in a nursery paddock are 4 of the month old foals!! Merriment and her colt bonding, Fancy Flutter hiding behind mother, Collection Prive’s a bit pensive, and Ramp Model’s showing off her blaze!
This season Merriment is visiting King’s Chapel, Fancy Flutter and Collection Prive are visiting A.P. Answer, and Ramp Model will be making the trip to Mauritzfontein in Kimberley to visit Ideal World.
Hong Kong horse racing delegation visit to Backworth Stud
(L to R) Eric Lee, Jeffrey Nxumalo (SAJA), Dr Tommy Tam, Mrs Tam, Peter Gibson (Racing SA), Mrs Wai Mi Cheung, Mrs Yuen, Andrew Yuen
“Apparently being born on 7th November could give her a lucky start…”
Backworth welcomed the visit from a Hong Kong delegation last week, organised through the enthusiastic efforts of Peter Gibson from Racing South Africa.
They braved the rain and thick mist to join us for drinks and a visit to the stable yard, but sadly just missed a foaling - King’s Chapel / Collection Prive.
Contact from the returning bus kept sms’ing through names for our new filly! Apparently being born on 7th November could give her a lucky start, so we are thinking that Seven Eleven should be her name! Another suggestion was Hong Kong Mist (missed?!)
We are so appreciative of these visits by interested people from the international community, and look forward to welcoming many more!

Silvano (GER) - Tsunami (SAF)
Earlier this week we shared with you the news of the arrival of Tsunami’s beautful ‘pure’ black filly foal by King’s Chapel.

Tsunami is daughter of Simunye (Aus) who had 2 wins at 2 over 1000m - 1100m and placed 3 times including 2nd in the Gosforth Park Juvenile Fillies Gr.2 and the Hibiscus Stakes (L).
Kahal (GB) - Touch Of Nobility (AUS)
Our Australian Mare ‘Touch of Nobility’ (Elusive Quality / Watermark) presented us on the weekend with a very spirited Kahal colt.
Touch Of Nobility’s second dam, Wajd (USA), had 4 wins in France including the Grand Prix d’Evry (Gr2), the Prix Minerve (Gr3) and the Prix des Tuileries (L) and placed 4 times in France, Germany and the UK including third places in the Prix Royaloak (Gr1), the Grosser Preis von Baden (Gr1), the Aston Upthorpe Yorkshire Oaks (Gr1) and the Ciga Prix de Royallieu (Gr2).
We also have an A.P. Answer (USA) yearling out of Touch of Nobility, and she will be visiting King’s Chapel (AUS) this season.
