The Yvette Bremner-trained Thrill Factor continued to live up to her name Friday at Fairview, scorching her competition to win by an emphatic four lengths for owners Messrs Gorgulho and Van Huyssteen with jockey Gift Funeka up.
Backworth-bred mare, Step It Up (Windrush - Moving On Up) tore up the Flamingo Park sand track Monday to score a decisive 3.75 length win for trainer Bill Human and owners the Steamers Syndicate with jockey Wes Marwing up.
Backworth-bred Colour Of Courage (Judpot - Exclusive Honour) opened his winning account in Mauritius Saturday for trainer Gilbert Rousset with Mauritian jockey Reehaze Hoolash up.
Spectacularus won in somewhat ‘spectacular’ fashion over 1000m on the polytrack Friday at Fairview for trainers Duncan McKenzie and Des McLachlan with jockey Muzi Yeni up.
Backworth-bred Island Fiesta did little wrong Saturday under jockey MJ Odendaal in the KZN Winter Challenge 1200 at Clairwood, being denied only in a final lunge to the line by the impressive Maine Chance-bred Crescendo, a son of Act One out of the Danehill mare Carambola, and the strapping Summerhill-bred Kahal gelding, Flyfirstclass.
The ultra-consistant Wendy Whitehead-trained son of Miesque’s Approval out of the Australian mare, Bermuda Junction, is a graduate from the Backworth draft of the 2010 KZN Yearling Sale and takes his career record to 4 wins and 11 places from 20 starts.

Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale
Suncoast Casino, Durban, South Africa
3-4 July 2014
The Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale (scheduled to be held this year on 3rd and 4th July) has a rich history of producing outstanding, yet affordable racehorses… its most famous graduate being recent SASCOC Triple Crown winner (only the second horse in history win the series), Louis The King.
Bred by The Alchemy, Louis The King was a R55,000 bargain buy at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale and has earned over R5 million to date. The Vodacom Durban July hopeful’s sire Black Minnaloushe will be strongly represented on the 2014 KZN Yearling with nine well bred yearlings on offer.
Louis The King is not the only top-class performer to have been offered at this sale however. The likes of Happy Valentine (Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship), Colour of Courage (Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes), Go Indigo (Gr2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas), Knock On Wood (Gr3 London News Stakes, 2nd Gr1 Champion Challenge) and Seal (Gr1 SA Derby) have all been offered at previous KZN Yearling Sales, and have all proved great bargain buys.
This year’s catalogue looks to have something for everyone. Top sires with yearlings on offer include Captain Al, Fort Wood, Judpot, Kahal, Silvano, Trippi and Var.
Other proven sires represented on sale include Antonius Pius, Ashaawes, Count Dubois, Horse Chestnut, Jay Peg, Mogok, Muhtafal and Windrush.
There are also yearlings on offer by promising young sires including A.P. Answer, Brave Tin Soldier, Elusive Fort, Ideal World, King’s Apostle, Lateral, Mambo In Seattle and Seventh Rock, to name but a few.
The following stakes winning mares also have lots on offer at the KZN Yearling Sale - Carambola (colt by Silvano), Dare to Dream (colt by Miesque’s Approval), Escoleta Fitz (colt by Ideal World), Haute Cuisine (filly by Mogok), Lunar Fields (filly by Slew The Red), Madrisa (filly by Bankable), National Navigator (colt by Bankable), Next Edition (filly by Muhtafal), Passive Resistance (filly by Kahal), Princess Sassi (colt by Brave Tin Soldier), Russian Nature (colt by Ravishing), Scripture (colt by Horse Chestnut), Supper Club (filly by Black Minnaloushe) and Thekkady (colt by Argonaut).
Held at the Suncoast Casino in Durban, the KZN Yearling Sale is not a sale that any serious buyer can afford to miss! For more information on this sale and the catalogue, please contact the TBA office on +27 (11) 323 5700 or visit their website - www.tba.co.za.
Editor’s note : Backworth Stud consigns a quality draft of yearlings to the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale including the progeny of A.P. Answer, Miesque’s Approval, King’s Chapel, Horse Chestnut and National Emblem.
Miesque’s Approval (USA) - Bermuda Junction (AUS) by Is It True (USA)
In her first run of 2014 yesterday, the Wendy Whitehead-trained Island Fiesta (Miesque’s Approval - Bermuda Junction) won a ‘nailbiter’ over Scottsville’s 1200m with jockey MJ Odendaal up. Fellow Backworth-bred Luxardo (Mogok - Absolut Star) was pipped into a photo third by the Summerhill Stud-bred Flyfirstclass (Kahal - Radiant Lass).
The 5-year-old Island Fiesta takes her career record to 4 wins and 7 places from 14 runs.
Congratulations to trainer Wendy Whitehead and fellow owners Messrs LR Whiteford, GS Calway, GPW Davis, T de Charmoy, JI Shaw, Sanjeev Ramsewak and Sanjeeth Ramsewak.

To our buyers and bidders, the underbidders and the brave hearted, and those who traipsed the TBA Sale Grounds in pursuit of their racy thoroughbred - ‘Thank You’ for your participation and support!
At Backworth we continually strive to raise the profile of our stock, our Stud and our relationships, and we hope that our 2011 Vintage offered at this year’s National Sale, proves that we were worth backing!
The week ended well with our sales average up, our turnover up, and with great performances from our 2010 Vintage purchased at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sales, we give thanks and toast ‘Colour of Courage’s (Judpot / Exclusive Honour) victory in the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes for trainer Mike Miller, and to ‘Dazzle’ (Muhtafal / Lady Electric) breaking her maiden in emphatic style for trainer Glen Kotzen.
We look forward to meeting again - on the track, in the auction ring, and through continuing industry interaction.
Muhtafal (USA) - Lady Electric (AUS) by Hennessy (USA)
Prior to Colour Of Courage’s fantastic victory the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes at Scottsville Sunday, Backworth had already scored in the first with Dazzle, a graduate of the 2011 KZN Yearling Sale, romping home to an impressive 4 length maiden win under jockey Anton Marcus for trainer Glen Kotzen.
The performance of the three-year-old filly was just the ‘cherry on the top’ for her owner Tony Moodley, following his Grade 2 success on Champions Day at Turffontein Saturday with Checcetti clinching the Bisquit Cognac Gerald Rosenberg Stakes.
Dazzle, by Muhtafal out of Lady Electric, is a half-sister to fellow-Backworth-bred Stakes winner Variometer. She has now won once and placed twice in her three starts.

It was lovely to welcome Mike and his team to Backworth on the weekend to share in a little Eston mist and drizzle, a wholesome luncheon and a fair share of banter and laughter… as well as to inspect our yearlings, albeit in the rain!
Together with Baroness Bergsma of Longford, Mike and Rae Miller, Mike Strydom and Marc and Nicola Coppez, a fun day was had by all. Baroness could have been back home in Newmarket, with our overcast and wet weather!
KZN BREEDERS RACE DAY
30 June 2013
Thoroughbred breeders in KwaZulu-Natal have initiated some unique marketing strategies over the years but under the umbrella of the KZN Breeders’ Club they have embarked on their most ambitious project yet with the announcement of the KZN Breeders Day to be held at Greyville on Sunday, 30 June 2013.
Supporting the R1million KZN Breeders Mile will be six other races carrying a stake of R200,000 each but restricted to horses that qualify as KZN-breds. The meeting comes the weekend before the KZN Yearling Sale and will give added incentive to prospective buyers to invest in KZN-bred stock.
The six supporting races will be two races each over 1200m, 1600m and 1900m, one each for fillies and mares and colts and geldings respectively. The races will be open to all horses country-wide whose credentials meet the criteria of ‘KZN bred’ as prescribed by the rules of the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme.
Horses need to be pre-entered to qualify for the races at a nominal fee of R50 plus VAT with first nominations closing on Friday, 14 December 2012. Early entry ensures that all horses nominated can be timeously checked to ensure that they qualify as KZN breds. However, there will be a further supplementary entry stage on Tuesday, 30 April 2013 with a supplementary fee of R2,000 plus VAT.
To qualify for the races, points will be awarded in the months leading up to the racemeeting. Horses registered at first entry will receive a 4-point bonus but horses supplemented in April will not qualify for the bonus. Points for Maiden races will be awarded on a 4, 3, 2 basis for first, second and third. All other races, including Grade 1’s, will have points awarded from first to fifth on 8, 6, 4, 3, 1 basis. Points will be awarded regardless of the distance of the races and it will be up to the connections of the horses as to which races they nominate for. The intention is to publish a points log on a fortnightly basis.
This season, points will be earned from 1 January, 2013 but as from next year the initial entry stage will be the first day of the season, Thursday, 1 August 2013.

There was no hanging about in Friday evening’s R135,000 Listed Gardenia Handicap run over 1000m at Turffontein. The speed queens were at full throttle from the jump.
The gallant speed mare Mannequin came out carrying top-weight of 62,5kgs, and while she failed to register her thirteenth victory, she was hardly disgraced when finishing in third; just under a length behind the year younger Variometer.
The race panned out perfectly for the champion jockey as the Mike Azzie-trained super-quick La Volta dashed off to lead the enthusiastic mare Mannequin, with Three Nations and Miss Cantona in hot pursuit.
Marcus worked Variometer through as Mannequin challenged La Volta late, and in a nailbiting drive to the wire Variometer edged ahead to win by a short head in a time of 56,72secs.
Goosen’s shrewd move in fitting the blinkers to a filly endowed with plenty of natural speed was just the tonic required to change the place cheque scenario into something far more rewarding. She is also a far better filly on the turf.
The Backworth Stud product Variometer, is out of the Australian- bred Hennessy mare, Lady Electric, who won once over 1000m from just 2 starts.
Variometer is now a winner of 5 of her 17 starts, with 7 places for stake earnings of R469,675. She cost R140,000 at the KZN Yearling Sale.
All her victories have been recorded over 1000m and this was her third Listed win after the Ruffian Stakes as a 2-year-old, and the Bauhinia Handicap in her 3-year-old season.
Variometer is always worth following over the minimum chop and should make a lovely broodmare in time to come.

SUNCOAST KZN YEARLING SALE
5 - 6 July 2012
The recent Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale ended on record highs all round with great buyer support in response to increased PR exposure and new Million Rand race incentives amongst numerous fresh innovations.
All these factors contributed to renewed enthusiasm in the Sales Ring and we foresee growth from here moving on! From a Backworth perspective, we sold 7 lots for an average of R102,143. (View a few photos left from the sales courtesy of Candiese Marnewick.)

Below is a roundup of the 2012 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale courtesy of KZN Breeders :
Day two of the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale saw the exciting momentum continue to increase from day one. The atmosphere was electric in the sales ring and history was made with the highest price ever being paid for a horse that had passed through the KZN Yearling Sale ring - a Trippi colt sold for R1,1 million consigned by Highlands Farms.
A total of 252 horses were catalogued with 189 sold, 15 withdrawn and 11 vendor buy-backs. The aggregate was R13,020,000 compared to last year’s R7,762,000. The average per horse sold was the best it has been since 2008 - finishing on an average of R68,889 compared to last year’s R45,392.
The top sire of the sale was King Of Kings - not surprising after he headed up the National Log for Leading Two-Year-Old Sires earlier this year. He sold 20 lots for an average of R71,000 each. The next top stallion was Mr Robin Scott’s Miesque’s Approval. An exceptional colt was sold, consigned by Scott Brothers for R425,000. Eton Square will be representing his sire in the Vodacom Durban July at Greyville on Saturday. Progeny of Miesque’s Approval averaged R85,667 each.
The top vendor of the sale went to Robin Scott of Scott Bros, selling 16 beautifully turned out lots for an average of R109,063.
The top buyer went to Mr L.J. Erasmus, who bought 11 lots averaging R141,818 each.
The top-priced KZN-bred filly for day 2 was Lot 170 from Backworth Stud, Maid For War (A.P. Arrow - Battalia (SNL) by Barathea), a first produce for her unraced dam. This is the family of Bold Black Type winners Big Stone (top-rated older miler in France in 1994), Billy The Kid, Blue Cloud and Rhythm Of Light, to name but a few.
Keith Russon of Backworth Stud in Eston, which is achieving an incredible 54% runners to winners, said it was wonderful to see a big upswing from previous years. “There were a lot of new people there at that sale, including trainers and buyers who never really participated in the sale previously,” he said afterwards. “It was clear that everyone’s hard work and effort from all the extra advertising with the new races has paid off, and we are on the road to better things. The KZN sale has never sold a horse for a million ever previously and it just shows that if you bring the right horse, you will get the right price. It’s all about bringing the right horse. Backworth had a great sale, we averaged about R100,000 and we are very happy. Everybody made a big effort, and that paid off. I think the challenge now is to bring better horses, two Miesque’s Approvals and the Atsos sold very well, and the Trippi for R1,1 million is just unbelievable - which just shows that the right horse you will get the money.”
The overall top-priced KZN-bred filly remained from Yellow Star Stud, Lot 34 by Silvano, Lady Silvia and was sold for R200,000 while the top-priced KZN-bred colt was a big, impressive individual from the Scott Bros, Lot 126 named Swedish King, a son of Miesque’s Approval out of French mare Eleonora by Fasliyev (USA), in turn out of a Foveros mare. He fetched R425,000 and was released by Greg Ennion Racing. This is Eleonora’s first foal and the dam is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Ingleside, and includes the family of Evening Mist, ARCSA Champion Older Female in 1988 as well as Misty Peak and Maggie Kay.
The top-priced yearling overall was a dark bay son of Trippi named Tiger Territory, out of Fragrant Filly by Model Man. A three-quarter brother to Franny, this family includes Scented Royal, Philipa Johnson and Texan Summer. He sold to Mr L.J. Erasmus for R1.1 million.
An excited Tom Callaghan, CEO of Bloodstock South Africa, said: “Compared to last year, it has been a resounding success. We were almost R5 million up from last year - we reached an average of R68 000 and the median will be a lot higher than last year obviously with the sales topper of R1.1 million which is unreal. Well done to the KZN Breeders and their team - the Triple Million was obviously a huge incentive for buyers and thanks must go to the Cape Breeders for supporting the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale and sending their yearlings here.”
The KZN Breeders would like to thank the Cape Breeders for making the trip up and sending quality yearlings to support the sale in Durban and we hope to see you back next year, as well as the TBA for their assistance with a very successful sale.
