Island Fiesta Challenging for KZN Breeders Series Top Spot

29 June 2014

The much anticipated KZN Breeders Race Day is set to be staged on 29 June 2014 at Clairwood racecourse. The fourth log for ‘three-year-olds and up’ has been published and sees the ultra consistent Backworth-bred Island Fiesta (Miesque’s Approval - Bermuda Junction) fighting out the top spot with the formidable Summerhill Stud-bred Negev (Stronghold - Haifaa).

Bred by Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud, Island Fiesta is trained by Wendy Whitehead and owned by a syndicate including Messrs LR Whiteford, GS Calway, GPW Davis, T de Charmoy, JI Shaw, Sanjeev Ramsewak, Sanjeeth Ramsewak and Miss W Whitehead.

Aptly named Island Fiesta, out of Backworth’s Austalian mare Burmuda Junction, by Is It True (USA), has only been out of the money on three occasions from 17 starts - winning four of them, scoring five seconds and placing five times. Burmuda Junction has produced seven winners from eight runners, including recent Backworth-bred winner by Atso, Bermuda Breeze.

Clairwood, 30 June 2013

The KZN Breeders raceday at Clairwood Sunday went down a rip-roaring success.

Headlined by the extremely competitive R1million KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Million Mile, it was evident on the day that increased sales profiling and lip service of the past few years had come to fruition!

From a Backworth perspective, we had two runners on the day; two half-sisters out of our Hennessey mare Lady Electric - Variometer by Var and Dazzle by Muhtafal.

To our delight, the pair ran an impressive 1st and 2nd in the R200,000 Midlands Thoroughbreds KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1200 for trainers Louis Goosen and Glen Kotzen respectively.

The Summerhill Stud-bred Selborne Supremecy (Kahal - Selborne Park) took honours for trainer Sean Tarry in the Backworth Stud-sponsored R200,000 KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1900.

30 June 2013

Thoroughbred breeders in KwaZulu-Natal have initiated some unique marketing strategies over the years but under the umbrella of the KZN Breeders’ Club they have embarked on their most ambitious project yet with the announcement of the KZN Breeders Day to be held at Greyville on Sunday, 30 June 2013.

Supporting the R1million KZN Breeders Mile will be six other races carrying a stake of R200,000 each but restricted to horses that qualify as KZN-breds. The meeting comes the weekend before the KZN Yearling Sale and will give added incentive to prospective buyers to invest in KZN-bred stock.

The six supporting races will be two races each over 1200m, 1600m and 1900m, one each for fillies and mares and colts and geldings respectively. The races will be open to all horses country-wide whose credentials meet the criteria of ‘KZN bred’ as prescribed by the rules of the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme.

Horses need to be pre-entered to qualify for the races at a nominal fee of R50 plus VAT with first nominations closing on Friday, 14 December 2012. Early entry ensures that all horses nominated can be timeously checked to ensure that they qualify as KZN breds. However, there will be a further supplementary entry stage on Tuesday, 30 April 2013 with a supplementary fee of R2,000 plus VAT.

To qualify for the races, points will be awarded in the months leading up to the racemeeting. Horses registered at first entry will receive a 4-point bonus but horses supplemented in April will not qualify for the bonus. Points for Maiden races will be awarded on a 4, 3, 2 basis for first, second and third. All other races, including Grade 1’s, will have points awarded from first to fifth on 8, 6, 4, 3, 1 basis. Points will be awarded regardless of the distance of the races and it will be up to the connections of the horses as to which races they nominate for. The intention is to publish a points log on a fortnightly basis.

This season, points will be earned from 1 January, 2013 but as from next year the initial entry stage will be the first day of the season, Thursday, 1 August 2013.

The KZN Breeder’s Race Day was a great success - first time running for R1million in the KZN Breeders Million Mile, first time at Greyville Racecourse in the week building up to the Vodacom Durban July, and first time hosted in The Classic Room.

The Classic Room was decorated to embrace the Durban July theme of ‘Material World’ and ‘Sustainability’. There was a party atmosphere amongst the 260 guests who, despite the exciting racing, enjoyed the excellent catering supplied by Harris and Homes, had fun in the Photo Booth, participated in the silent auction for the enticing selection of donated goods, and partook in a session with the Tarot Card reader!

It was a positive endorsement to the enthusiasm and effort that the KZN Breeder’s are making in order to raise the profile of racing and breeding in our wonderful province, and with the further, additional R1million race next July day, things are looking good!!
