Ode to an Autumn Evening

Ode to an Autumn Evening

A horse basks in the suns golden rays, its hide burning like fire while the flame-like sun causes the tawny lades of grass to throw long shadows outward along the parched ground. The once turquoise sky is now painted with rose, violet, and cadmium making the heavens look like a great pastel canvas.

Miss Frankel... Something Special!

Miss Frankel... Something Special!

With a motto of “quality, not quantity”, one can hardly be surprised by the return to Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm last week of legendary Equus Champion Sprinter, Val de Ra, with her superb Frankel filly, Miss Frankel, intow.

Frankel Filly for Backworth-bred Chocolicious

Frankel and ChocoliciousFrankel and Chocolicious / Telegraph - Gold Circle (p)

FRANKEL (GB) - CHOCOLICIOUS (SAF)

Backworth-bred daughter of Kahal, Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship victress Chocolicious, has foaled a good leggy chestnut filly by Frankel in Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.

A mare who attracted plenty of attention at the Goff’s November Sale due to her Southern Hemisphere covering date by Frankel, the 14-time winner who retired to stud with the highest Timeform Rating in history of 147.

The then six-year-old mare was purchased by Oliver St Lawrence in foal to champion Frankel at the Goff’s breeding stock sale in Ireland for €400,000. Chocolicious was one of three offered at the sale in foal to Frankel, bred to Southern Hemisphere time, consigned for Darren Dance’s Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock by Ballyhane Stud.

Unbeaten superstar Frankel, widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses in history, currently stands at Banstead Manor in Newmarket, and has a stud fee of GBP 125,000 - or over R2.2 million.

Chocolicious (rated MR 105) won six races from 1000m to 1200m in South Africa, and placed in the UAE 1000 Guineas behind Mahbooba.

Bred by Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud, she is out of Grade 3 winning daughter of Exclusive Patriot named Candy Box - herself out of an Our Casey’s Boy/Brer Rabbit/Tom Rolfe mare. Candy Box bred three winners from four runners, and descends from the family of Hot Cross Bun and Royal Wish.

We have been advised that 25% of Frankel’s first Northern Hemisphere crop of foals are chestnut and that his Sire Galileo has left plenty of good chestnuts, including dual Derby, and this week’s Juddmonte International winner, Australia.

Top Of The Chocs, a half-brother to Chocolicious by Miesque’s Approval, turned on the speed just over a week ago, over 1000m at Champ de Mars to cement a confident third in the Supertote Trophy for trainer Hughes Maigrot with jockey Gerald Avranche up.

The much anticipated KZN Breeders Race Day is set to be staged on 29 June 2014 at Clairwood racecourse. The fourth log for ‘three-year-olds and up’ has been published and sees the ultra consistent Backworth-bred Island Fiesta (Miesque’s Approval - Bermuda Junction) fighting out the top spot with the formidable Summerhill Stud-bred Negev (Stronghold - Haifaa).

Bred by Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud, Island Fiesta is trained by Wendy Whitehead and owned by a syndicate including Messrs LR Whiteford, GS Calway, GPW Davis, T de Charmoy, JI Shaw, Sanjeev Ramsewak, Sanjeeth Ramsewak and Miss W Whitehead.

Aptly named Island Fiesta, out of Backworth’s Austalian mare Burmuda Junction, by Is It True (USA), has only been out of the money on three occasions from 17 starts - winning four of them, scoring five seconds and placing five times. Burmuda Junction has produced seven winners from eight runners, including recent Backworth-bred winner by Atso, Bermuda Breeze.

Champions Honoured at 2013 KZN Breeders Awards

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
16 November 2013

“Backworth Stud is proud to have received the award for Outstanding Two-Year-Old Colt,
for the Backworth-bred Colour Of Courage (Judpot - Exclusive Honour),
winner of the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes.”

The KZN Breeders Awards took place for the third year at the beautiful and scenic Bellwood Stud owned by Willie and Jeanine Messenger - made even more special for the Messengers with their Grade 3 winning filly, Enchanted Kingdom, being a nominee this year.

(Click here to check out the gallery from the evening)

With a full house attended by Breeders, Owners and Trainers alike, the Chairman of the KZN Breeders Association - Koos De Klerk, opened the prestigious evening by saying that he was very excited about the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the KZN Breeders Association. “I would like to think that we could build on what we started - expanding and building even further on the success we have had in the sales ring by promoting KwaZulu-Natal-bred horses as a brand that we can all be proud of. We enjoyed the most brilliant KZN Breeders day this year - racing for R2.5million for KZN-bred horses only. We seem to have been so successful that we have become the victims of our own success!”

Champion sire for 2013 was once again the great son of Machiavellian standing at Bush Hill Stud - the magnificent Kahal owned by Shadwell Stud. Represented at the awards by six nominees, a number in repeat categories, Kahal is consistently in the top four of the National Sires log and responsible for the outstanding filly voted as KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year - Festival Of Fire, bred by Mr Chris Saunders and Lady O’Reilly. A six-time winner including a Grade 2 and two Grade 3 races, Festival Of Fire descends from the immediate dam-line of another KZN-bred champion in Jet Master.

The KZN Breeders honoured Chris Saunders this year with an Award for Special Lifetime Achievement, which manager Fili Bowles accepted on his behalf: “I am sure that I speak for all the people that have served him in this industry from the early days. We have all been privilege to his loyalty, generosity of spirit and kind and his great wealth of knowledge and wisdom. Words cannot express the time, effort and financial commitment he has devoted to this industry, and so on behalf of Chris Saunders from the bottom of my heart I am so grateful to all present here tonight for honouring this great man.”

Festival Of Fire took home three awards, including Outstanding 3-Year-Old-Filly, Outstanding Sprinter Female and Outstanding Middle Distance Female. Kahal didn’t stop there however - his Grade 1 winning son Love Struck took home the Outstanding 3-Year-Old Colt award, as well as Outstanding Middle Distance Male, with another plain bay daughter in Checcetti being awarded Outstanding Older Female - both of the latter horses bred by KZN’s (and South Africa’s) Leading breeders’ Summerhill Stud. Glynis Van Der Merwe had the rare honour of having two horses nominated for the evening - an extremely impressive achievement for a smaller breeder. She had previous winner Las Ramblas nominated for Outstanding Middle Distance Female, and Approachable in the Outstanding Sprinter Male.

Seal, bred by Dr Heyns and born and raised at Bush Hill Stud, has had an outstanding year - and fittingly took home two awards - Outstanding Male Stayer and Outstanding Older Male.

Summerhill Stud’s Japanese import, the striking chestnut stallion Admire Main took home the Award for Stallion Prospect of the Year. His daughter Admiral’s Eye, Grade 1 placed on Vodacom Durban July day, won Outstanding 2-Year-Old Filly, while Joyce and Robin Scott took home the International Achievement Award for the highly successful overseas campaign of The Apache (by Mogok) and Broodmare Of The Year to Apache Rose, the dam of Mogok, who sadly passed away earlier this year in foal once again to Mogok.

Their other Mogok success of the evening was Meadow Magic, the Grade 2 Emerald Cup winner. The Breeders Achievement Award sponsored by Summerhill Stud went to an ecstatic Pierre Du Toit, breeder of Kinematic Countess – for boasting the best average stakes earned per runner for the previous season.

Mick Goss received the Anita Akal Award on behalf of Toni Dolstra, a lady who dedicated 25 years to the administration of the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme - the only one of its kind in South Africa.

The KZN Breeders thanked all its supporters and sponsors for the evening, and especially to Gold Circle for their ongoing support. Koos De klerk ended his speech fittingly: “I congratulate Robert Mauvis and his Board - their vision to continually improve the profile of KZN racing and more particularly in their move to ensure Greyville becomes the Capital of South African Racing with improvements to the tracks, the centre and the introduction of Friday night racing every Friday night. Please be assured the KZN Breeders Club is right behind you!”

A big thank you to all those who attended and supported our special evening - in particular to our sponsors who helped to make it possible: Odds On Colours, Equine (two awards), Suthile Feeds, Choice Carriers, Epol Feeds, Racing Association, Equifeeds, Kuda, Spurwing, Thoroughbred Breeders Association (two awards), Gold Circle (three awards), Almiray Vet Practice and Balmoral Stud.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Thank You!

Backworth Stud

To our buyers and bidders, the underbidders and the brave hearted, and those who traipsed the TBA Sale Grounds in pursuit of their racy thoroughbred - ‘Thank You’ for your participation and support!

At Backworth we continually strive to raise the profile of our stock, our Stud and our relationships, and we hope that our 2011 Vintage offered at this year’s National Sale, proves that we were worth backing!

The week ended well with our sales average up, our turnover up, and with great performances from our 2010 Vintage purchased at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sales, we give thanks and toast ‘Colour of Courage’s (Judpot / Exclusive Honour) victory in the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes for trainer Mike Miller, and to ‘Dazzle’ (Muhtafal / Lady Electric) breaking her maiden in emphatic style for trainer Glen Kotzen.

We look forward to meeting again - on the track, in the auction ring, and through continuing industry interaction.

Thank You!

Keith and Ian

'Long overdue relax' for Anant Singh and Family

Keith and I welcomed movie mogul Anant Singh and family to Backworth for a ‘long overdue relax’ over the Easter weekend.

Anant has been running to a hectic international schedule; producing Nelson Mandela’s ‘Long Walk to Freedom’ movie which is due for release later in the year.

Vanashree, Gyana and Kiyan also enjoyed the lazy Midlands mornings, walks in paddocks with the horses, relaxed meals, all inbetween some quite competitive tennis challenges!

Anant and Vanashree enjoy a successful racing association with Barry Irwin of Team Valor International (part-owner of this past weekend’s Dubai World Cup winner, Animal Kingdom) and have been stalwart Backworth-bred supporters over the years.

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
17 November 2012

The KZN Breeders Association held their annual awards on a misty evening at Bellwood Cottages on 17 November to honour the people and Thoroughbreds that have done the industry proud of the past season.

It was an evening that was very well-attended by prominent breeders, owners and trainers alike. It also included an event which brought much fun and amusement into the exciting atmosphere - the inaugural running of the ‘Donkey Derby’ which was won by Bradley McHardy of Quest For Success Pre-training.

Graeme Hawkins, the COO of Gold Circle, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and the KZN Breeders Association Chairman, Koos de Klerk, gave both a welcoming and motivating speech regarding the exciting events that have occurred within the ambit of the KZN Breeders of the past year - as well as giving a hint of exciting prospects and plans for the year ahead.

“I want to extend a personal thank you to the board members of KZN Breeders Club and the effort that each of the members put in for the welfare of the club and breeders in KZN,” said Koos de Klerk. “Thank you too to the sponsors of the awards, it is greatly appreciated. We have had a number of initiatives that have borne fruit and will in future include the KZN Breeders Golf Day and KZN Breeders Million Mile Race Day, KZN Yearling Sales and the R1million race initiated for Vodacom Durban July day which is part of the initiative of our Triple Million Challenge. For a horse that can achieve the treble: winning the R1million race on Vodacom Durban July day, the next year’s Million Mile as a three-year-old and the following year as a four year old, a R1million bonus will be paid. Moving ahead, we will have another six races for R200,000 next year on the KZN Breeders Race Day (incorporating the Million Mile). Further details will be announced very soon - all of which will promote racing and breeding in KZN and we hope to see the results of that. We have already seen the success of the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale. Candiese Marnewick has been appointed as an admin manager and we hope to have her at all sales as well as to brand KZN horses, to promote KZN horses and to promote the Breeders Premium Scheme. We are also looking forward to some serious stallion purchases, starting with the announcement of Crusade.”

Congratulations must go to the winners which saw Dancewiththedevil crowned KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year for a second consecutive year. Breeder, owner and trainer St John Gray was on hand to recieve numerous awards which included Broodmare Of The Year for Emperor’s Dance who resides at Cathy and Jonathan Martin’s Hadlow Stud for St John Gray.

KZN Breeders Stallion Of The Year went to Kahal, owned by Shadwell Stud and now standing at Warwick and Karin Render’s Bush Hill Stud. Kahal was represented with a number of nominees on the evening, in particular he stood out as the sire of every nominee in the category of Outstanding Female Sprinter - won ultimately by Mannequin of Summerhill Stud. Bush Hill Stud took home awards for The Mouseketeer in the category of Outstanding Male Sprinter on behalf of breeder Dr Ian Heyns, as well as for the Bush Hill-stud raised Seal for Outstanding Male Stayer.

Summerhill Stud once again took home the award for Leading Breeder Of The Year and achieved wins in a total of five categories - with Extra Zero, Mannequin and Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje.

Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud won the award for Breeding Achievement. Backworth Stud had achieved an impressive 53% runners to winners ratio over the last racing season. Backworth’s Variometer, nominee for Outstanding Three-Year-Old Sprinter Female and Outstanding Three-Year-Old Filly had gone onto win the Gardenia Listed Handicap the evening before the awards in a very impressive fashion from a strong field of sprinting fillies that included winner of the Outstanding Female Sprinter categoey, Mannequin (bred by Summerhill Stud).

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
Bellwood Cottages, 17 November 2012

The KZN Breeders Association will be hosting the annual Awards evening at Bellwood Cottages on 17 November; congratulations to all the breeders with horses nominated for this years awards.

Summerhill Stud, being the champion breeders that they are, have the biggest nominee representation at the upcoming awards, with 11 nominations and seven horses - including the likes of Pierre Jourdan, Black Wing, Love Struck, Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje and fillies such as Mannequin, Checcetti and Extra Zero.

Backworth Stud have two nominations with fast fillies Chocolicious and Variometer. Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth have had an excellent year, producing a runners to winners percentage of over 53% - with a number of Black-type winners achieved last season. Variometer has been nominated for Outstanding Three-Year-Old Sprinter Female, as well as Outstanding Three-Year-Old Filly, whilst Gr1 winning Chocolicious is in the Outstanding Sprinter Female category.

Scott Bros consistently produce classy performers and this year is no different. The recent emergence of Eton Square, a son of their resident sire Miesque’s Approval, won a Gr3 earlier this year and went on to place in the Vodacom Durban July, leaving a trail of talented horses in his wake. Others the Scott Bros have up for nomination are Mogok’s Desire and another by Mogok with The Apache. The Apache was exported earlier this year and is now under the care of Mike de Kock - he was scheduled to campaign in the East but a change of plan now sees The Apache in Dubai.

Bush Hill Stud have the flag flying, represented by The Mouseketeer - and another proud moment with Dr Ian Heyns’ Seal, who was born and raised at Warwick and Karin Render’s farm.

Bush Hill Stud are represented in two categories with The Mousketeer (by Kahal), and against Seal (also with two nominations) in the Outstanding Older Male category. Their resident sire Kahal has seven of his progeny nominated - and it must be pointed out that the category of Outstanding Sprinter Female sees all three nominees by Kahal, bred by three different breeders. The Renders’ recently welcomed a full-brother to The Mousketeer last week.

KZN Breeders Association Chairman Koos De Klerk, has Greenacre nominated in the category of Outstanding Two Year Old Colt, bred by his and Lorraine De Klerk’s Yellow Star Stud.

Aldora have Soul Master, a son of KZN-bred national champion sire Jet Master, nominated for Outstanding Male Stayer. Soul Master recently won the Listed Java Handicap by two lengths, carrying top weight of 60kgs over 2450m.

Another point of interest is Rob and Michele Pickering’s Daylami filly, Kalami. She is out of Kal Sufi which makes her a half-sister to Model K, the sale-stopper of the 2012 KZN Mixed Sale this year - she is the dam of Mannequin (bred by Summerhill Stud) who has a nomination in the category of Outstanding Sprinter Female. Kalami has been nominated for Outstanding 3 Year-Old Filly. Model K foaled a full-sister to Mannequin this year.

St John Gray’s Graystone Stud have two nominees - Dancewiththedevil who was voted KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year in 2011 - and Engagement - who recently retired to Hadlow Stud. Dancewiththedevil is on her way to an exciting career in the UK and this year’s awards see her in two different categories. Engagement is a daughter of Announce, a stallion that St John Gray has had a lot of success with as well as his full brother Sarge. Engagement will be up against her ex-paddock and stablemate, Dancewiththedevil, as well as Checcetti in the award for Outstanding Middle Distance Female.

It is rewarding to see a number of horses nominated that come from private breeders. Awesome Beauty, bred by Mr Bunwarie, is by Cataloochee out of Bejewelled Beauty. Born and raised at Mike and Tanya McHardy’s Rathmor Stud, her dam Bejewelled Beauty has produced a chestnut Strategic News (AUS) colt this season.

Shogunnar, by Solksjaer bred by Fenn Tarbitt, is a half-brother to two successful black-type racemares in Saltwater Girl and Rapid Flow. The dam Surfer’s Eye has an outstanding Admire Main filly named Admiral’s Eye (Lot 120), a horse who ran an impressive gallop at Summerhill last week entered on the upcoming Emperors Palace Ready To Run sale. Shogunnar has been nominated in the category of Outstanding 3 Year-Old Colt.

Messrs P and RM Sewgoolam have Furious Dancer nominated for Outstanding Male Sprinter. Furious Dancer was foaled at Neil Sykes’ Orangewood Stud while Kjell Foundation have Kalaam, a daughter of Kahal, nominated for two categories.

Mr and Mrs Rosseau of St Helier Stud have made KZN proud with Madigan, who recently took home Zimbabwe’s Joint Horse Of The Year. Madigan won the Zimbabwean Triple Crown earlier this year. Madigan has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Three Year Old Colt.

The KZN Breeders Awards evening will start at 6 for 6:30pm, R300 per person. Contact Candiese (candiese@kznbreeders.co.za) if you would like to make a booking for the evening.

Spring is a special time at Backworth; the rambling gardens a vivid blaze of colour! What better way to enjoy the season than a relaxed lunch with great company in the shade of the old Oak tree.

EARLY THANKSGIVING FOR BACKWORTH

early thanksgiving rss

“We really are celebrating an early Thanksgiving this year!”

We looked at the Sporting Post statistics for the 2011-2012 season, and have to say how proud we are. From just 37 runners, Backworth Stud ended up in 30th place on the National Log with R2,272,386 earnings, and from there 1st position in Places to Runners of 38%, 2nd position Winners to Runners of 54%, and 8th position with and AEPR of R61,416.

But on closer analysis, one acknowledges there is much more to give thanks for! And that is to all the players in this incredible game - it is a privilege to be a part of it.

We start by celebrating the horse, this amazing animal that leaves us in daily wonder. So, in acknowledging performance, we need to congratulate trainers, where Paul Matchett’s ‘Raise The Bar’ (Gold Keeper / Moving On Up) was our biggest contributing earner, closely contested by Herman Brown trained ‘Chocolicious’ (Kahal/Candy Box), Louis Goosen’s ‘Variometer’ (Var/Lady Electric), Lucky Houdalakis’ ‘Glitter Star’ (Muhtafal/Celestial Charm), Brian Wiid’s Varlet (Var/Miss Unimac ) and Ivan Moore’s ‘Devonella’ (Kahal/Devon-Sent) to name a few.

There were the jockeys who were a part in achieving this great Win and Place statistic, and Anton Marcus rode his 200th victory on Backworth-bred Glitter Star, helping him achieve top Jockey position with 205 wins.

But life isn’t just about performance! It’s about knowing the rules, and playing the game fairly, it’s about integrity, it’s about trust, it’s about embracing your fellows, and respecting everyone’s right to earn an honest living. It is also about support - and for that we are certainly fortunate. We’ve witnessed a growing loyalty from owners, trainers, pre-trainers, vets and interest groups, who see the value in a Backworth-bred. We appreciate the dedication, concern and professionalism of our Stud vet and farrier. We enjoy the sporting challenge from our fellow breeders, the cooperation of the stallion owners, the insurers, the transporters, the feed company, the advertising agency, the bank, the racing companies, auction houses, Tellytrack, and all the partnerships that bring this business together. We are forever grateful for the underbidders at sales, the competition on the race track, and the thrill and stress of the auctions. It is all the amazing new people we continually meet, and who share (or respect) this obsession! It is the visitors to the Stud. And then, there are the friends and family, with their perennial, evergreen commitment and interest in Backworth.

We like to think we can factor in an elusive, mystery ‘soul’ factor to our Backworth-breds. It is what has brought us to where we are, and it is many things. It’s the committed passion of the team on the farm, who are as much the face of our business as are our horses in the training yards around the country. It’s the hours spent pouring over pedigrees and planning matings. It is that resilience to ride out on the challenging tracks livestock breeding puts you through. It’s making business decisions that defy fiscal logic! It’s the tedious admin. It’s the gentle relationships with the mares and horses on the farm. It’s dreaming of the potential in a foal. It’s the natural beauty of the environment we breed in, the winds that blow through our fields, the sun that shines on our paddocks, and the mists that shroud us in mystery. It’s believing in what we do. It’s Scotty dogs, it’s our treasured home and it’s where our hearts are. It is all of this, and we continue to be absolutely passionate about all things Backworth!

We write from Eston, end August, seven beautiful foals on the ground, fifteen to go, and with the recent settling rains, there is that wonderful promise of spring in the air.

So whilst giving “thanks” for our 2011-2012 Breeding Year, with the benchmarks of Frankel and Black Caviar on the table, we take on the 2012-2013 Breeding Year with a renewed vigour!

Yes, Thanksgiving has come early for Backworth!
