We witnessed superb performances from Backworth-breds in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape this past week for trainers Michael Miller, Dorrie Sham and Tony Rivalland.
Backworth-bred Humidor made it 4 wins from just 6 starts when powering home in the Middle Stakes over 1200m at Scottsville Wednesday for trainer Tony Rivalland with maestro Anton Marcus up.
Winterbach Stud, run by father and son duo Hendrik Winterbach and Hendrik Winterbach Jnr, played host to the arrival of a fine Var colt foal for Backworth, out of our Rich Man's Gold mare, Refined Gold.
If you cast your mind back to the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale you may recall an intriguing buzz surrounding a certain Backworth-bred bay filly named Spangle. Being by Trippi out of the Rich Man’s Gold mare Refined Gold, Spangle boasted an impressive pedigree and we were inundated with callers from across the country.

EMPERORS PALACE NATIONAL YEARLING SALE
TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa
27 - 28 April 2014
There was great excitement for the Backworth Stud team at the opening session of the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale this afternoon.
The first seven figure lot sold at NYS 2014 came just five lots into proceedings when lot 5 Alloy, the Backworth-bred son of champion sire Silvano out of Refined Gold, was knocked down to Form Bloodstock for an even R1 million.
The bay colt is out of a winning daughter of Rich Man’s Gold (broodmare sire of SASCOC Triple Crown victor Louis The King).
Named Alloy, the R1 million colt is from the same family as previous Triple Crown winner, and promising sire, Horse Chestnut, as well as champion Monyela and this season’s smart 3-year-old filly, Close The Gap.
Congratulations to Form Bloodstock who have purchased a quality colt with a world-class pedigree!
Horse Chestnut (SAF) - Flutter Bye (SAF)
In a somewhat ironic scheduling of nature, Flutter Bye, a half sister to Grade 2 Ipi Tombe Challenge victress First Again, presented Backworth with our ‘second’ foal of the season. A strapping colt by arguably the best racehorse to have run in South Africa in the past 40 years and the nation’s only Triple Crown winner in history, Horse Chestnut.
If his first few days in the paddocks are any indication, this chap is sure to send a few ‘hearts a fluttering’.
Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale
TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa
26 - 28 April 2013
Lot 113, a bay yearling SPANGLE, by Trippi out of Refined Gold by Rich Man’s Gold has attracted the attention of buyers ahead of the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. Keith Russon of Backworth Stud says he has fielded calls from across the country with buyers interested in the eye-catching filly.
Her dam, Refined Gold was a winner over 1400m and has to date produced a winner from her first foal - White Tiger. She comes from an exceptional dam-line, fourth dam is London Wall - famous for producing one of the best racehorses to come from South Africa who returned recently from the USA to stand in South Africa - Horse Chestnut - and this family’s descendants include plenty of Bold Black Type, almost too many to mention - but the likes of Cape Badger, Monyela, West Wall, Iron Curtain, and the second dam’s full-sister Sport’s Chestnut are all present.
An exceptional pedigree in the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale catalogue - what makes this pedigree stand out from the rest?
This is the exact same ‘nick’ as one of America’s top race fillies of her time - and the best horse (and daughter) Trippi has produced to date - a bay filly named R Heat Lightning.
Winner of the Gr 1 Spinaway Stakes as a two year old, R Heat Lightning is out of a Gold Fever (Forty Niner) mare named Yellow Heat. Bred in Florida and trained by Todd Pletcher, she placed second to Awesome Feather in the Gr 1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies and Gr 1 Frizette over a mile (1600m), and as a three-year-old went on to add the Gr 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in dominating fashion, winning by a scorching eight and a quarter lengths.
She also added Gr 2 Davona Dale Stakes to her list of victories - again by a margin of seven and a quarter lengths. She also placed in the Gr 2 Forward Gal Stakes. A favourite for the Gr 1 Kentucky Oaks, she was withdrawn from the race after heat was detected in her knee.
From eight starts R Heat Lightning had four wins and three places, earning almost US$1million in stakes. She was covered by Medaglia D’Oro in 2012.
The Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale takes place between 26 and 28 April at Germiston in Johannesburg and Backworth Stud can be found in ‘G’ stable block.
Horse Chestnut (SAF) - Exclusive Honour (SAF)
We all know the legacy of Horse Chestnut, arguably the best racehorse to run in South Africa in the past 40 years, and South Africa’s only ever Triple Crown winner! In a short, but amazing career, Horse Chestnut won nine of his ten career starts and earned in excess of $470,000.
His achievements included Horse of the Year in 1999; Champion 3-year-old Colt and Champion Male Stayer; won from 1000m in 57.3 secs on his debut to 2450m - the SA Derby (Gr.1) by 10 lengths. He was the first three-year-old in 54 years to win the J&B Met (Gr.1) by 8 lengths and he won the Cape Guineas (Gr.1) by 7.5 lengths. In his only start on foreign soil he won the Gr.3 Broward Handicap in Gulfstream Park by 5.5 lengths.
Now look at this beaut of a filly foal by Horse Chestnut out of our Exclusive Patriot mare, Exclusive Honour… like father like daughter, like mother like daughter.
We’re proud to announce the acquisition from the Cape Mare and Weanling Sale of two lovely mares who will be joining the Backworth broodmare band.
REFINED GOLD (Rich Man’s Gold (USA) - Lorgnette)
Refined Gold (8 year old; dam by Sportsworld) is a 1400m winner and half sister to Grade 3 placed stakes winner Loupe, their dam is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Sport’s Chestnut. This is the female line of Horse Chestnut. The mare has two foals by Tiger Ridge and we purchased her in foal to Trippi on a November cover. This is interesting, as Trippi’s best US filly, Grade 1 winner R Heat Lightning, is out of a mare by Gold Fever - a son of Forty Niner, with Damascus as second damsire. That’s the same as Rich Man’s Gold. The mating gives 3×3 Forty Niner, and a foal that’s close kin to R Heat Lightning.

Their dam is a stakes placed half sister to Cape Guineas runner-up Superior Service. Clematis was offered as a mare for stud and is yet to be covered.
