FRANKEL (GB) - CHOCOLICIOUS (SAF)

Backworth-bred daughter of Kahal, Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship victress Chocolicious, has foaled a good leggy chestnut filly by Frankel in Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.

A mare who attracted plenty of attention at the Goff’s November Sale due to her Southern Hemisphere covering date by Frankel, the 14-time winner who retired to stud with the highest Timeform Rating in history of 147.

The then six-year-old mare was purchased by Oliver St Lawrence in foal to champion Frankel at the Goff’s breeding stock sale in Ireland for €400,000. Chocolicious was one of three offered at the sale in foal to Frankel, bred to Southern Hemisphere time, consigned for Darren Dance’s Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock by Ballyhane Stud.

Unbeaten superstar Frankel, widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses in history, currently stands at Banstead Manor in Newmarket, and has a stud fee of GBP 125,000 - or over R2.2 million.

Chocolicious (rated MR 105) won six races from 1000m to 1200m in South Africa, and placed in the UAE 1000 Guineas behind Mahbooba.

Bred by Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud, she is out of Grade 3 winning daughter of Exclusive Patriot named Candy Box - herself out of an Our Casey’s Boy/Brer Rabbit/Tom Rolfe mare. Candy Box bred three winners from four runners, and descends from the family of Hot Cross Bun and Royal Wish.

We have been advised that 25% of Frankel’s first Northern Hemisphere crop of foals are chestnut and that his Sire Galileo has left plenty of good chestnuts, including dual Derby, and this week’s Juddmonte International winner, Australia.

To hear the words Backworth Stud, Kahal, Chocolicious and Frankel in one sentence should be enough to get anyone to sitting up and taking notice. Keith Russon and Ian Todd’s Backworth-bred Chocolicious, a Grade 1 Allan Robertson winner and a daughter of Kahal, sold for €400,000 at the Goff’s breeding stock sale in Ireland in foal to Frankel.

The mare was one of three at the sale in foal to Frankel, and was bred to Southern Hemisphere time, consigned for Darren Dance’s Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock by Ballyhane Stud.

KZN-bred Chocolicious (rated MR 105) won six races from 1000 to 1200m in South Africa, and placed in the UAE 1000 Guineas. Chocolicious is out of Grade 3 winning daughter of Exclusive Patriot, Candy Box - herself out of a Our Casey’s Boy/Brer Rabbit/Tom Rolfe mare. Candy Box bred three winners from four runners, and descends from the family of Hot Cross Bun and Royal Wish.

The 6-year-old mare was bought by agent Oliver St Lawrence.

Backworth Stud recently won the KZN Breeders Award for Champion Two-Year-Old colt, the Grade 2 winning son of Judpot - Colour Of Courage. Kahal was fittingly awarded KZN Breeders Stallion Of Year yet again, and also had the added accolade of being the sire of the Horse Of The Year, filly Festival Of Fire.

Goffs announced this week the addition of another top class mare in foal to Frankel to the forthcoming Goffs November Sale. The mare in question is the Backworth Stud-bred Chocolicious. This is her first foal in what is also the first covering season for the world’s racing sensation, Frankel.

The South African and KwaZulu-Natal-bred Group 1 winner, Chocolicious, will be offered on Day 1 of the Breeding Stock Sale, Friday 22 November, the same day as the much anticipated Paulyn Dispersal.

The six-year-old Chocolicious, by top South African sire Kahal, was a Group 1 winner in South Africa at three and is out of the Group 3 winning and Group 1 placed South African mare, Candy Box by Exclusive Patriot.

Chocolicious is bred by Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud in Eston, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

A boutique stud farm with an exclusive band of well-bred broodmares, Backworth Stud took home the 2012 KZN Breeders Award for Outstanding Breeding Achievement, having bred an impressive 53% runners to winners ratio over the 2011/2012 racing season.

Chocolicious joins Group winner Hazel Lavery and Song, the own sister to Classic winner Yesterday, in an elite group of mares in foal to the great Frankel at Goffs this November.

A six-time winner including the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship, Chocolicious also placed a very close second in the Grade 3 Magnolia Handicap behind Jackadore and fourth behind Ebony Flyer in the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint, just two and half lengths off.

Chocolicious will be consigned by Ballyhane on behalf of Australian Thoroughbred Racing.

“We’ve been looking for a sprinter to take to Royal Ascot
for the last couple of years”

Marco Botti’s cosmopolitan Newmarket yard is about to add a fresh dimension, with the springtime arrival of South African sprinting mare Chocolicious, who has been bought by the Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock syndicate with visits to Royal Ascot and Frankel on her agenda.

ATB, also has half-brothers Jakkalberry and Crackerjack King in training with Botti.

The trainer’s wife Lucie Botti confirmed: “We’re expecting Chocolicious to arrive in the spring, with a view to being prepared for Royal Ascot.”

The daughter of Kahal out of an Exclusive Patriot mare, Candy Box, was bred by Backworth Stud in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Chocolicious has won five of her 16 starts, including the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship over 6f as a three-year-old.

She ran three times at last year’s Dubai World Cup Carnival at Meydan. Piloted by Ryan Moore, Chocolicious finished third in the UAE 1,000 Guineas and was a narrow second to Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Crying Lightening in a 7f conditions event, but has been lightly raced on her return to South Africa.

ATB member Darren Dance told Australian media: “We’ve been looking for a sprinter to take to Royal Ascot for the last couple of years, and Chocolicious provides the perfect opportunity. We’d like to send her to Frankel at the end of her racing career.”

One Last Hurrah for Backworth-bred Chocolicious

CHOCOLICIOUS (SAF)
Kahal (GB) - Candy Box by Exclusive Patriot (USA)

In one last hurrah before embarking on a new racing career in the UK and Australia, the Backworth-bred 5-year-old mare, Chocolicious, blasted to a 3.25m length Boxing Day win under jockey Keagan de Melo for trainers Herman Brown and Frank Robinson.

The daughter of Kahal proved far too quick for a high-class field of fillies and mares, leaving speedsters She’s A Stunner (Toreador), Big On Broadway (AUS) (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Choir Maiden (AUS) (Choisir) struggling in her wake.

Chocolicious, winner of the Allan Robertson Fillies Championship (Grade 1) as a 2-year-old, closes her South African racing career with 6 wins and 8 places from 18 starts and R672,530 in earnings.

Chocolicious is now UK-bound, via Mauritius, where her connections are hoping to aim her at Royal Ascot. She is owned and managed by Darren and Elizabeth Dance and will race internationally with a group of their clients from Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock.

Backworth-bred Chocolicious Sold Down Under

“Extract from European Bloodstock News”

In a private deal brokered by Gary Moore of Gavelhouse, South African Grade 1 winner Chocolicious has been sold to Australians Darren and Elizabeth Dance, who will race her with a group of their clients from Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock.

Bred at the picturesque Backworth Stud in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, the daughter of leading sire Kahal and the Gr.3 Strelitzia Stakes victress Candy Box was rated amongst the leading juvenile fillies two seasons ago, when she landed the prestigious Gr.1 Allan Robertson Championship.

Following a stint in Dubai, where she was third in the UAE Guineas, she returned to her home country and added three more victories to her resume at four. The five-year-old mare remains in training and is scheduled to head for the UK in early 2013.

Based in Victoria, the Dances manage and operate Manningtree Park and have tasted considerable success in syndicating Gr.1 winning racing stock. A feature of their operation is the opportunity for their clients to race horses in Graded races in Australia and worldwide, and a decision last year to invest in international stayers to tackle the major distance races resulted in Crackerjack King winning the Gr.1 Rome Premio Presidente della Repubblica and having three runners in the recent Gr.1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington, the most successful of which, Jakkalberry, finished third behind the Irish-bred Green Moon.

KZN Breeders Awards Nominations 2012

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
Bellwood Cottages, 17 November 2012

The KZN Breeders Association will be hosting the annual Awards evening at Bellwood Cottages on 17 November; congratulations to all the breeders with horses nominated for this years awards.

Summerhill Stud, being the champion breeders that they are, have the biggest nominee representation at the upcoming awards, with 11 nominations and seven horses - including the likes of Pierre Jourdan, Black Wing, Love Struck, Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje and fillies such as Mannequin, Checcetti and Extra Zero.

Backworth Stud have two nominations with fast fillies Chocolicious and Variometer. Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth have had an excellent year, producing a runners to winners percentage of over 53% - with a number of Black-type winners achieved last season. Variometer has been nominated for Outstanding Three-Year-Old Sprinter Female, as well as Outstanding Three-Year-Old Filly, whilst Gr1 winning Chocolicious is in the Outstanding Sprinter Female category.

Scott Bros consistently produce classy performers and this year is no different. The recent emergence of Eton Square, a son of their resident sire Miesque’s Approval, won a Gr3 earlier this year and went on to place in the Vodacom Durban July, leaving a trail of talented horses in his wake. Others the Scott Bros have up for nomination are Mogok’s Desire and another by Mogok with The Apache. The Apache was exported earlier this year and is now under the care of Mike de Kock - he was scheduled to campaign in the East but a change of plan now sees The Apache in Dubai.

Bush Hill Stud have the flag flying, represented by The Mouseketeer - and another proud moment with Dr Ian Heyns’ Seal, who was born and raised at Warwick and Karin Render’s farm.

Bush Hill Stud are represented in two categories with The Mousketeer (by Kahal), and against Seal (also with two nominations) in the Outstanding Older Male category. Their resident sire Kahal has seven of his progeny nominated - and it must be pointed out that the category of Outstanding Sprinter Female sees all three nominees by Kahal, bred by three different breeders. The Renders’ recently welcomed a full-brother to The Mousketeer last week.

KZN Breeders Association Chairman Koos De Klerk, has Greenacre nominated in the category of Outstanding Two Year Old Colt, bred by his and Lorraine De Klerk’s Yellow Star Stud.

Aldora have Soul Master, a son of KZN-bred national champion sire Jet Master, nominated for Outstanding Male Stayer. Soul Master recently won the Listed Java Handicap by two lengths, carrying top weight of 60kgs over 2450m.

Another point of interest is Rob and Michele Pickering’s Daylami filly, Kalami. She is out of Kal Sufi which makes her a half-sister to Model K, the sale-stopper of the 2012 KZN Mixed Sale this year - she is the dam of Mannequin (bred by Summerhill Stud) who has a nomination in the category of Outstanding Sprinter Female. Kalami has been nominated for Outstanding 3 Year-Old Filly. Model K foaled a full-sister to Mannequin this year.

St John Gray’s Graystone Stud have two nominees - Dancewiththedevil who was voted KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year in 2011 - and Engagement - who recently retired to Hadlow Stud. Dancewiththedevil is on her way to an exciting career in the UK and this year’s awards see her in two different categories. Engagement is a daughter of Announce, a stallion that St John Gray has had a lot of success with as well as his full brother Sarge. Engagement will be up against her ex-paddock and stablemate, Dancewiththedevil, as well as Checcetti in the award for Outstanding Middle Distance Female.

It is rewarding to see a number of horses nominated that come from private breeders. Awesome Beauty, bred by Mr Bunwarie, is by Cataloochee out of Bejewelled Beauty. Born and raised at Mike and Tanya McHardy’s Rathmor Stud, her dam Bejewelled Beauty has produced a chestnut Strategic News (AUS) colt this season.

Shogunnar, by Solksjaer bred by Fenn Tarbitt, is a half-brother to two successful black-type racemares in Saltwater Girl and Rapid Flow. The dam Surfer’s Eye has an outstanding Admire Main filly named Admiral’s Eye (Lot 120), a horse who ran an impressive gallop at Summerhill last week entered on the upcoming Emperors Palace Ready To Run sale. Shogunnar has been nominated in the category of Outstanding 3 Year-Old Colt.

Messrs P and RM Sewgoolam have Furious Dancer nominated for Outstanding Male Sprinter. Furious Dancer was foaled at Neil Sykes’ Orangewood Stud while Kjell Foundation have Kalaam, a daughter of Kahal, nominated for two categories.

Mr and Mrs Rosseau of St Helier Stud have made KZN proud with Madigan, who recently took home Zimbabwe’s Joint Horse Of The Year. Madigan won the Zimbabwean Triple Crown earlier this year. Madigan has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Three Year Old Colt.

The KZN Breeders Awards evening will start at 6 for 6:30pm, R300 per person. Contact Candiese (candiese@kznbreeders.co.za) if you would like to make a booking for the evening.

EARLY THANKSGIVING FOR BACKWORTH

early thanksgiving rss

“We really are celebrating an early Thanksgiving this year!”

We looked at the Sporting Post statistics for the 2011-2012 season, and have to say how proud we are. From just 37 runners, Backworth Stud ended up in 30th place on the National Log with R2,272,386 earnings, and from there 1st position in Places to Runners of 38%, 2nd position Winners to Runners of 54%, and 8th position with and AEPR of R61,416.

But on closer analysis, one acknowledges there is much more to give thanks for! And that is to all the players in this incredible game - it is a privilege to be a part of it.

We start by celebrating the horse, this amazing animal that leaves us in daily wonder. So, in acknowledging performance, we need to congratulate trainers, where Paul Matchett’s ‘Raise The Bar’ (Gold Keeper / Moving On Up) was our biggest contributing earner, closely contested by Herman Brown trained ‘Chocolicious’ (Kahal/Candy Box), Louis Goosen’s ‘Variometer’ (Var/Lady Electric), Lucky Houdalakis’ ‘Glitter Star’ (Muhtafal/Celestial Charm), Brian Wiid’s Varlet (Var/Miss Unimac ) and Ivan Moore’s ‘Devonella’ (Kahal/Devon-Sent) to name a few.

There were the jockeys who were a part in achieving this great Win and Place statistic, and Anton Marcus rode his 200th victory on Backworth-bred Glitter Star, helping him achieve top Jockey position with 205 wins.

But life isn’t just about performance! It’s about knowing the rules, and playing the game fairly, it’s about integrity, it’s about trust, it’s about embracing your fellows, and respecting everyone’s right to earn an honest living. It is also about support - and for that we are certainly fortunate. We’ve witnessed a growing loyalty from owners, trainers, pre-trainers, vets and interest groups, who see the value in a Backworth-bred. We appreciate the dedication, concern and professionalism of our Stud vet and farrier. We enjoy the sporting challenge from our fellow breeders, the cooperation of the stallion owners, the insurers, the transporters, the feed company, the advertising agency, the bank, the racing companies, auction houses, Tellytrack, and all the partnerships that bring this business together. We are forever grateful for the underbidders at sales, the competition on the race track, and the thrill and stress of the auctions. It is all the amazing new people we continually meet, and who share (or respect) this obsession! It is the visitors to the Stud. And then, there are the friends and family, with their perennial, evergreen commitment and interest in Backworth.

We like to think we can factor in an elusive, mystery ‘soul’ factor to our Backworth-breds. It is what has brought us to where we are, and it is many things. It’s the committed passion of the team on the farm, who are as much the face of our business as are our horses in the training yards around the country. It’s the hours spent pouring over pedigrees and planning matings. It is that resilience to ride out on the challenging tracks livestock breeding puts you through. It’s making business decisions that defy fiscal logic! It’s the tedious admin. It’s the gentle relationships with the mares and horses on the farm. It’s dreaming of the potential in a foal. It’s the natural beauty of the environment we breed in, the winds that blow through our fields, the sun that shines on our paddocks, and the mists that shroud us in mystery. It’s believing in what we do. It’s Scotty dogs, it’s our treasured home and it’s where our hearts are. It is all of this, and we continue to be absolutely passionate about all things Backworth!

We write from Eston, end August, seven beautiful foals on the ground, fifteen to go, and with the recent settling rains, there is that wonderful promise of spring in the air.

So whilst giving “thanks” for our 2011-2012 Breeding Year, with the benchmarks of Frankel and Black Caviar on the table, we take on the 2012-2013 Breeding Year with a renewed vigour!

Yes, Thanksgiving has come early for Backworth!

Keith and Ian

Following on from her very respectable fourth behind Ebony Flyer in the South African Fillies Sprint (Grade 1) two weeks ago, Chocolicious (Kahal - Candy Box) continued to show good form Friday evening with a great run in the Serendipity Tours Conditions Plate (F & M) over 1000m at Greyville.

Taking on the might of the KwaZulu-Natal Stakes (Listed) one-two winning combination in Torra Bay (AUS) (Cape Cross (IRE) - Vodka Twist (AUS)) and Sweet Aria (IRE) (Celtic Swing (GB) - Carina Ari (IRE)), the Backworth-bred filly dispayed a true fighting spirit to turn the tables on her fellow speedsters under a confident ride by jockey Keagan Latham.

This win takes Chocolicious’ South African career record to 5 wins and 8 places from 15 starts for earnings of R563,155.

Congratulations to trainers Herman Brown Jnr and Frank Robinson and owners Messrs P Ebbs, MG Frost, MA Robinson & Ms L Kapustina, Messrs HJ Brown (Jnr) & NC Smith.

SOUTH AFRICAN FILLIES SPRINT (GRADE 1)
Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, KZN

The field for last Saturday’s R500,000 South African Fillies Sprint (Grade 1) included a classy bunch of very fast females.

Last season’s Equus 2 year-old Champion filly, Princess Victoria (SAF) (Victory Moon), had won the Poinsettia Stakes (Grade 3) last time out and lined up for the SA Fillies Sprint off a perfect prep. Mike de Kock’s Welwitschia (GB) (Oasis Dream) had pulverised the opposition at her last start in the Camelia Stakes (Grade 2) and Ebony Flyer (SAF) (Jet Master) came off a break after winning last time out in the Majorca Stakes (Grade 1). Let’s not forget the ultra consistant Backworth-bred Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship victress, Chocolicious (SAF) (Kahal - Candy Box). We could go on and on but simply put, it was a star-studded line-up of very good girls.

Chocolicious (SAF) didn’t disgrace and powered home for a classy fourth under jockey Keagan Latham for trainers Herman Brown Jnr and Frank Robinson; following Ebony Flyer (SAF), Welwitschia (GB) and She’s A Stunner (SAF).

2011 Dubai Racing Carnival UAE 1000 Guineas third place finisher, Chocolicious, was beautifully turned out for a Conditions Plate for Fillies and Mares over 1200m at Clairwood on Boxing Day.

Chocolicious, prepared by Frank Robinson for the Herman Brown / Frank Robinson partnership, led from gun to tape at a high cruising speed and won by four lengths under jockey Karis Teetan. The 4-year-old bay filly posted a winning time of 68.31 which was faster than the time clocked by Coffee Sheik in a MR94 Handicap for Colts and Geldings an hour later.

Jockey Karis Teetan said : “Frank wanted me to follow one other if possible, but the tailwind was strong and she jumped very well, so I let her stay in front. She was travelling easy and quickened again when I asked her to go at the 400m mark.”

Trainer Frank Robinson commented : “Ian (Sturgeon) and I discussed her last run at Turffontein and we believe she may have won if she’d raced handier, so things worked out well today with the tailwind.”

Chocolicious, who won the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship as a two-year-old, was bred and raised at Backworth Stud. She’s by Kahal (GB) from Candy Box (SAF) by Exclusive Patriot (USA) and hasn’t missed the money in ten career starts.
