Congratulations to the connections.

Aquinata Storms to Maiden Win for Dorrie Sham

Backworth-bred Aquinata won a super race Friday at Fairview for trainer Dorrie Sham with jockey Karl Zechner up. Prior to this maiden win, the striking grey daughter of Silvano, out of Tsunami by Shaamit, had placed twice from her first two starts. Congratulations to owners Adriaan and Rika van Vuuren... we’re certain this filly is just getting started!

Dilemma time!! Hermes, Handbags... or Horses?

“The Midas Touch”

Backworth welcomed the visits this past weekend of dear friend of the farm Anne Veltman, Robin and Joyce Scott, Keith and Pauline Young and the Marnewick family; Michael, Candiese, Julia and Mia.

Hermes, Handbags… or Horses?! Anne Veltman was presented with a ‘real dilemma’ as she was simply taken in by Aquinata; a flashy, grey filly yearling by Silvano out of Tsunami.

After many years of committed and successful racing in Zimbabwe, as well as her midas touch, maybe it’s time Anne swopped shopping in London for the real thing?!

As seen in the pic above, Stud Manager Johan Alberts endorses Anne’s choice of Yearling!

2013 National Yearling Sale Inspection

Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale
TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa
26 & 28 April 2013

Backworth Stud enjoyed John Kramer and Kerry Jack’s visit to inspect our yearlings nominated for the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, and are pleased to share that despite bad weather, our ‘nominated yearlings’ were well received. The horses did themselves proud averaging a score of 8.5 with a few 9 toppers.

There is a good stallion mix in the draft, with Western Winter, Silvano, Trippi, Kahal, Muhtafal and Miesque’s Approval stamping their mark.

There are always a few that take one’s eye, and in particular is the big rangey grey Silvano filly ‘Aquinata’ out of Tsunami who really has a commanding presence. The Western Winter filly ‘Cold Fact’ is a strong workmanlike specimen, whilst the Miesque’s Approval colt ‘Humidor’ out of Lewinsky’s Lover is very impressive showing plenty quality.

We are some months off the sales, and preparation is just beginning, so we look forward to sharing their development over the next few months.
