"Quality comes through over the sprint" and no better place to reveal a young horse's God-given talents than over Scottsville's testing finishing straight.

On her second run back from a break, Bella Miesque, jumped well from the 12 gate to settle in second under jockey Alec Forbes heading into a hazy Greville 1400m.

Scintillating Scottsville Sunday

Whilst we desperately await the start of the rainy season here in KwaZulu-Natal, there was no dampening the spirits of our Backworth-breds Sunday, as they blitzed the Scottsville turf in scintillating fashion.

Mary Liley’s gutsy Backworth-bred gelding, Lucky Break, thrilled revelers Friday at Greyville’s ‘Night Racing’, tearing up the poly straight to get up on the line under ‘Master Jockey’, Anton Marcus, ahead of the flying Mynameisbond, Live Controversy and Semonkong.

Choisir (AUS) - Prolong (AUS) by Gold Brose (AUS)

Choir Maiden won impressively by 3.2 lengths Sunday for trainer Tony Rivalland under a confident ride from top jockey Anton Marcus.

An Australian import, Backworth races this daughter of Choisir, one of the best young sires in Australia, with our dear friend Mary Liley.

The Coolmore Stud stallion rates consistently among the leading sires in Australia. He was Champion 2-year-old colt of his year and winner of the Group 1 Lightning Stakes at 3. Choisir put Australian thoroughbreds on the map as never before when winning both the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and the Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot within 5 days of each other.

Choisir’s leading performers include Starspangledbanner, a dual hemisphere champion, dual Group 1 winner Sacred Choice, 2012 Group 1 winning 2-year-old Choice Bro as well as 2013 Group 1 winner Historian. He is the sire of eleven individual Stakes winners including three exciting 2-year-olds already this season!

This win takes Choir Maiden’s career record to 4 wins and 8 places from 16 starts.

Prior to Colour Of Courage’s fantastic victory the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes at Scottsville Sunday, Backworth had already scored in the first with Dazzle, a graduate of the 2011 KZN Yearling Sale, romping home to an impressive 4 length maiden win under jockey Anton Marcus for trainer Glen Kotzen.

The performance of the three-year-old filly was just the ‘cherry on the top’ for her owner Tony Moodley, following his Grade 2 success on Champions Day at Turffontein Saturday with Checcetti clinching the Bisquit Cognac Gerald Rosenberg Stakes.

Dazzle, by Muhtafal out of Lady Electric, is a half-sister to fellow-Backworth-bred Stakes winner Variometer. She has now won once and placed twice in her three starts.

Variometer Electrifies Gardenia Handicap Speed Queens

Var (USA) - Lady Electric (AUS)

There was no hanging about in Friday evening’s R135,000 Listed Gardenia Handicap run over 1000m at Turffontein. The speed queens were at full throttle from the jump.

The gallant speed mare Mannequin came out carrying top-weight of 62,5kgs, and while she failed to register her thirteenth victory, she was hardly disgraced when finishing in third; just under a length behind the year younger Variometer.

Anton Marcus rode a top-class race when producing the Louis Goosen-trained flyer at the right moment inside the final 200m to register a heartstopping win.

The race panned out perfectly for the champion jockey as the Mike Azzie-trained super-quick La Volta dashed off to lead the enthusiastic mare Mannequin, with Three Nations and Miss Cantona in hot pursuit.

Marcus worked Variometer through as Mannequin challenged La Volta late, and in a nailbiting drive to the wire Variometer edged ahead to win by a short head in a time of 56,72secs.

Goosen’s shrewd move in fitting the blinkers to a filly endowed with plenty of natural speed was just the tonic required to change the place cheque scenario into something far more rewarding. She is also a far better filly on the turf.

The Backworth Stud product Variometer, is out of the Australian- bred Hennessy mare, Lady Electric, who won once over 1000m from just 2 starts.

Variometer is now a winner of 5 of her 17 starts, with 7 places for stake earnings of R469,675. She cost R140,000 at the KZN Yearling Sale.

All her victories have been recorded over 1000m and this was her third Listed win after the Ruffian Stakes as a 2-year-old, and the Bauhinia Handicap in her 3-year-old season.

Variometer is always worth following over the minimum chop and should make a lovely broodmare in time to come.

Not missing the money in 8 starts, the Backworth-bred Glitter Star (Muhtafal - Celestial Charm) notched up a third win Sunday at Turffontein under jockey Anton Marcus for trainer Lucky Houdalakis. Interestingly, this was Anton Marcus’ 200th victory of the season and we’re proud to have played a small part in his quest for the South African Champion Jockey title for a second year running.

Glitter Star’s dam, Celestial Charm, is a half sister to Roland’s Song; ARCSA Champion 2-year-old filly, Horse Of The Year, Champion 3-year-old and Champion Older Female.

The 4-year-old gelding takes his career record to 3 wins and 5 places from 8 starts. Congratulations to owner Mr ME Leaf.
