Backworth Stud has long been established as one of KwaZulu-Natal's truly boutique stud farms. Home to Keith Russon and Ian Todd since 1993, their passion, patience, love and appreciation for the magnificent thoroughbred is most evident throughout the estate which offers an environment of beauty, of establishment and of fine aesthetics.

The property enjoys a wonderful rambling garden, with a 1km driveway lined with Azaleas, Yellowwoods and Hydrangeas, with many avenues of Plane and Liquid Amber trees throughout. There are many fine specimens of trees, namely the Cedars of Lebanon and Italian Oaks, with stories of seeds purchased, propagated and planted in the early 1900s.

Backworth Stud is a subliminally beautiful property. Standing proud at 1,100m above sea level, the estate boasts 360⁰ of uninterrupted views across the breathtaking Southern KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. A gentle, temperate climate caresses avenues of Yellowwood trees, and an abundance of Hydrangeas and Azaleas surround Backworth House, the rambling thatch homestead built in 1924.

Backworth is a fine property, a holistic breeding environment aimed at raising of quality Thoroughbreds. It shares its soul with all who visit to appreciate this remarkable boutique Thoroughbred breeding stud.
