Var (USA) - Lewinsky’s Lover by Jallad (USA)

Backworth had a good day’s racing Friday with Backworth-breds scoring a first, second, third and fifth.

Kicking off the weekend’s results was the Muhtafal mare, Floristry, with a 2nd over 1200m at Fairview for trainer Duncan McKenzie.

Next up was the speedy Var mare, Caviar, who took honours over Greyville’s 1400m for trainer Colin Scott beating a talented line-up including Festival Of Fire, winner of the Grade 2 KRA Fillies Guineas, Grade 3 Starling Stakes and the Grade 3 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge.

To cap off the day’s racing, the Judpot colt Colour Of Courage and the Mogok mare Luxardo finished 3rd and 5th for trainers Michael Miller and Mark Dixon respectively in the last over 1200m.

The classy Backworth-bred Caviar (Var / Lewinsky’s Lover) won convincingly under MJ Odendaal at Clairwood Sunday, carrying top weight over a speedy 1200m.

This win takes the smart filly’s career record to 4 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds from 12 starts; and kicks off what promises to be a ‘Caviar & Champagne’ year ahead for Backworth-breds.

Congratulations to Summerveld-based trainer Colin Scott and owners Rob Scott and the Two Oceans Racing Syndicate.

Caviar is from the family of Soho Secret; ARCSA Champion Broodmare in 1995, Kings Gambit; Equus Champion Stayer in 2008, London News; ARCSA Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and Horse of The Year in 1995 and Champion Older Male and Horse Of The Year in 1996, and Promisefrommyheart; Equus Champion Three-Year-Old Classic Female in 2004.

KZN BREEDERS RACE DAY
Clairwood, 30 June 2013

The KZN Breeders raceday at Clairwood Sunday went down a rip-roaring success.

Headlined by the extremely competitive R1million KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Million Mile, it was evident on the day that increased sales profiling and lip service of the past few years had come to fruition!

From a Backworth perspective, we had two runners on the day; two half-sisters out of our Hennessey mare Lady Electric - Variometer by Var and Dazzle by Muhtafal.

To our delight, the pair ran an impressive 1st and 2nd in the R200,000 Midlands Thoroughbreds KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1200 for trainers Louis Goosen and Glen Kotzen respectively.

The Summerhill Stud-bred Selborne Supremecy (Kahal - Selborne Park) took honours for trainer Sean Tarry in the Backworth Stud-sponsored R200,000 KwaZulu-Natal Breeders 1900.

Variometer Electrifies Gardenia Handicap Speed Queens

VARIOMETER (SAF)
Var (USA) - Lady Electric (AUS)

There was no hanging about in Friday evening’s R135,000 Listed Gardenia Handicap run over 1000m at Turffontein. The speed queens were at full throttle from the jump.

The gallant speed mare Mannequin came out carrying top-weight of 62,5kgs, and while she failed to register her thirteenth victory, she was hardly disgraced when finishing in third; just under a length behind the year younger Variometer.

Anton Marcus rode a top-class race when producing the Louis Goosen-trained flyer at the right moment inside the final 200m to register a heartstopping win.

The race panned out perfectly for the champion jockey as the Mike Azzie-trained super-quick La Volta dashed off to lead the enthusiastic mare Mannequin, with Three Nations and Miss Cantona in hot pursuit.

Marcus worked Variometer through as Mannequin challenged La Volta late, and in a nailbiting drive to the wire Variometer edged ahead to win by a short head in a time of 56,72secs.

Goosen’s shrewd move in fitting the blinkers to a filly endowed with plenty of natural speed was just the tonic required to change the place cheque scenario into something far more rewarding. She is also a far better filly on the turf.

The Backworth Stud product Variometer, is out of the Australian- bred Hennessy mare, Lady Electric, who won once over 1000m from just 2 starts.

Variometer is now a winner of 5 of her 17 starts, with 7 places for stake earnings of R469,675. She cost R140,000 at the KZN Yearling Sale.

All her victories have been recorded over 1000m and this was her third Listed win after the Ruffian Stakes as a 2-year-old, and the Bauhinia Handicap in her 3-year-old season.

Variometer is always worth following over the minimum chop and should make a lovely broodmare in time to come.

This rather ‘somber looking’, unusual-colored colt foal by Var, out of maiden mare Clematis, was not enjoying his first day in head collar!

He has no reason to be somber though! Clematis by Silvano, had 3 wins at 3 to 5 over 1400m to 2000m and placed 3 times including a cracking 2nd in the Off To Stud Handicap (L).

Her dam, Upwardly Mobile, had 3 wins and 11 places including a 3rd in the Diamond Stakes (L). She is the dam of Badger’s Gift, by Badger Land, who recorded 8 wins including the TBA Paddock Stakes (Gr1) and the Diana Stakes (Gr3), and 16 places including 2nd in the Odessa Stud Fillies Championship (Gr2) and the Victress Stakes (L) and 3rd in the Tibouchina Stakes (Gr2), the Prix Du Cap (Gr3) and the Riverworld Stud Prix Du Cap (Gr3).

Var (USA) - In Camera (SAF)

We welcomed the news this week of the arrival of our sixth foal of the season, a lovely colt born at Avontuur Stud in the Western Cape.

By the sire of Variety Club, 2012 Equus Horse of The Year, out of In Camera by Caesour, we’re wondering just how ‘var’st this strapping colt is going to go.

In Camera recorded 4 wins and 2 places over 1200m at 3 to 4. Her dam, Dance Celebre, is an own sister to Silver Stream and a half sister to Dance Along and Consensual. Consensual is the dam of Give Me Five who recorded four wins over 1160m to 1200m including the Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship, the Gr2 Camellia Stakes and the Gr3 Sycamore Sprint.
