National Yearling Sales Judges Come to Eston!

27 - 28 April 2014

There was great excitement for the Backworth Stud team at the opening session of the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale this afternoon.

The first seven figure lot sold at NYS 2014 came just five lots into proceedings when lot 5 Alloy, the Backworth-bred son of champion sire Silvano out of Refined Gold, was knocked down to Form Bloodstock for an even R1 million.

The bay colt is out of a winning daughter of Rich Man’s Gold (broodmare sire of SASCOC Triple Crown victor Louis The King).

Named Alloy, the R1 million colt is from the same family as previous Triple Crown winner, and promising sire, Horse Chestnut, as well as champion Monyela and this season’s smart 3-year-old filly, Close The Gap.

Congratulations to Form Bloodstock who have purchased a quality colt with a world-class pedigree!

Lot 186 JOLLERIE (Judpot (USA) - Angel Bells)
Lot 192 ICE RUN (Western Winter (USA) - Blue Lace Agate)

Thank You!

Backworth Stud

To our buyers and bidders, the underbidders and the brave hearted, and those who traipsed the TBA Sale Grounds in pursuit of their racy thoroughbred - ‘Thank You’ for your participation and support!

At Backworth we continually strive to raise the profile of our stock, our Stud and our relationships, and we hope that our 2011 Vintage offered at this year’s National Sale, proves that we were worth backing!

The week ended well with our sales average up, our turnover up, and with great performances from our 2010 Vintage purchased at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sales, we give thanks and toast ‘Colour of Courage’s (Judpot / Exclusive Honour) victory in the Grade 2 Umkhomazi Stakes for trainer Mike Miller, and to ‘Dazzle’ (Muhtafal / Lady Electric) breaking her maiden in emphatic style for trainer Glen Kotzen.

We look forward to meeting again - on the track, in the auction ring, and through continuing industry interaction.

Thank You!

Keith and Ian

Lot 113, a bay yearling SPANGLE, by Trippi out of Refined Gold by Rich Man’s Gold has attracted the attention of buyers ahead of the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. Keith Russon of Backworth Stud says he has fielded calls from across the country with buyers interested in the eye-catching filly.

Her dam, Refined Gold was a winner over 1400m and has to date produced a winner from her first foal - White Tiger. She comes from an exceptional dam-line, fourth dam is London Wall - famous for producing one of the best racehorses to come from South Africa who returned recently from the USA to stand in South Africa - Horse Chestnut - and this family’s descendants include plenty of Bold Black Type, almost too many to mention - but the likes of Cape Badger, Monyela, West Wall, Iron Curtain, and the second dam’s full-sister Sport’s Chestnut are all present.

An exceptional pedigree in the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale catalogue - what makes this pedigree stand out from the rest?

The secret lies with broodmare sire Rich Man’s Gold - himself by Forty Niner - and in turn sire Trippi’s paternal grandfather.

This is the exact same ‘nick’ as one of America’s top race fillies of her time - and the best horse (and daughter) Trippi has produced to date - a bay filly named R Heat Lightning.

Winner of the Gr 1 Spinaway Stakes as a two year old, R Heat Lightning is out of a Gold Fever (Forty Niner) mare named Yellow Heat. Bred in Florida and trained by Todd Pletcher, she placed second to Awesome Feather in the Gr 1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies and Gr 1 Frizette over a mile (1600m), and as a three-year-old went on to add the Gr 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in dominating fashion, winning by a scorching eight and a quarter lengths.

She also added Gr 2 Davona Dale Stakes to her list of victories - again by a margin of seven and a quarter lengths. She also placed in the Gr 2 Forward Gal Stakes. A favourite for the Gr 1 Kentucky Oaks, she was withdrawn from the race after heat was detected in her knee.

From eight starts R Heat Lightning had four wins and three places, earning almost US$1million in stakes. She was covered by Medaglia D’Oro in 2012.

The Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale takes place between 26 and 28 April at Germiston in Johannesburg and Backworth Stud can be found in ‘G’ stable block.

2013 National Yearling Sale Inspection

2013 national yearling sale inspection rss

Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale
TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa
26 & 28 April 2013

Backworth Stud enjoyed John Kramer and Kerry Jack’s visit to inspect our yearlings nominated for the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, and are pleased to share that despite bad weather, our ‘nominated yearlings’ were well received. The horses did themselves proud averaging a score of 8.5 with a few 9 toppers.

There is a good stallion mix in the draft, with Western Winter, Silvano, Trippi, Kahal, Muhtafal and Miesque’s Approval stamping their mark.

There are always a few that take one’s eye, and in particular is the big rangey grey Silvano filly ‘Aquinata’ out of Tsunami who really has a commanding presence. The Western Winter filly ‘Cold Fact’ is a strong workmanlike specimen, whilst the Miesque’s Approval colt ‘Humidor’ out of Lewinsky’s Lover is very impressive showing plenty quality.

We are some months off the sales, and preparation is just beginning, so we look forward to sharing their development over the next few months.

EMPERORS PALACE NATIONAL YEARLING SALE
TBA Sales Complex, South Africa
27 - 29 April 2012

BLOODSTOCK SOUTH AFRICA - The 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale ended Sunday on a realistic, but positive note.

The overall average price of R240,441 fell slightly from last year’s average of R250,511, and the gross total dropped from R93,190,000 to R81,750,000.

However, the figures this year are a far more accurate reflection of the market’s state of being, with the new vendor buy back scheme coming into play this year. Previous years, overall figures hid these same buy backs, and grossly exaggerated the market.

The top priced lot emerged towards the end of the two day sale. A Jet Master colt, consigned by Drakenstein Stud, sold for R1.7 million. An own brother to Grade 1 winner Stratos, the colt named Stratocruiser, was consigned by Klipdrif Stud (as Agent). He was purchased by Glen Kotzen.

Top priced filly on sale was lot 235, a daughter of Black Minnaloushe. Consigned by Varsfontein Stud (as Agent), the filly is a half-sister to two Oaks winners, Arcola and Princess of Light. She was bought, for R800,000, by D Chinsammy.

Leading vendor at the sale, by aggregate, was Klipdrif Stud (Agent). They sold 17 yearlings for a total of R7,425 million.

Leading vendors by average, five or more sold, were Drakenstein Stud. The farm sold 11 yearlings for an average price of R440,909.

Form Bloodstock were the sale’s leading buyers, by gross aggregate. They purchased 27 horses for a total of R10,890,000, ahead of Park Bloodstock, Mike Bass Racing and D Chinsammy.

Trippi, who has made such a wonderful start to his stud career in South Africa, led the sires list, by aggregate. His 20 lots to sell grossed R10,495,000. Jet Master was second best, ahead of Captain Al, Black Minnaloushe and Silvano.

However, Jet Master led the sires list by averages. The late, great sire sold 15 yearlings for an average of R529,667.

TBA CEO Jan Naude expressed satisfaction with the sale’s overall performance, saying, “I am happy that the average price remained very similar to that of last year, especially when taking into account the state of the market. I also firmly believe this year’s figures are a more accurate reflection, due to the new vendor buy back concept.”
