Winterbach Stud, run by father and son duo Hendrik Winterbach and Hendrik Winterbach Jnr, played host to the arrival of a fine Var colt foal for Backworth, out of our Rich Man's Gold mare, Refined Gold.
With a motto of “quality, not quantity”, one can hardly be surprised by the return to Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm last week of legendary Equus Champion Sprinter, Val de Ra, with her superb Frankel filly, Miss Frankel, intow.
In the photo above, Keith shares a moment of tranquility with a lovely Crusade foal… notice the lightning-fast approach though of an extermemly vigilant mare, National Seeker! What happened next?

Var (USA) - Hargraves Bell (SAF)

“We have been ‘Truly Blessed’ with our foals this season.”
We travelled down to the Cape last week to visit a few of our mares boarding at Winterbach Stud… as well as to see four new foals!
The mares and foals are looking fantastic and we are so appreciative to Hendrik Winterbach Snr & Jnr for the professional care and interest both have for our visiting contingent. It is a risky business travelling one’s mares away for the season, and the Winterbachs continue to do an excellent job for us!
Of the 16 mares sent to Winterbach, we have already had quite a few tested in foal and are awaiting results on a few others that have been covered.
As Hendrik Snr said, “We have been ‘Truly Blessed’ with our foals this season”, and our feeling is that this is the best crop Backworth has ever had, both physically and speciman-wise… and we are extremeley excited!
Here are four new arrivals; a strapping Byword colt out of Dancing Royale, a handsome Byword colt out of Cupid’s Daughter, a leggy Kahal colt out of Gilt Edge and an elegant Crusade filly out of Forbidden Woods.
Toreador (IRE) - War Echo (SAF)
Bewildered? Yes… he ‘is’ only a few minutes old. Welcome to this lovely Toreador colt foal out of a very special mare, War Echo, half sister to Stormsvlei - dam of Pocket Power and River Jetez!

MIESQUE’S APPROVAL (USA) - TOUCH OF NOBILITY (AUS)
“Nobility is a social class that possesses more acknowledged privileges or eminence than most other classes in a society, membership thereof typically being hereditary.” - Wikipedia
This leggy filly promises more than just a ‘touch of nobility’ being by the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner, Miesque’s Approval, out of the familiy of Wajd, winner of the Group 2 Grand Prix d’Evry, the Group 3 Prix Minerve and the Listed Prix des Tuileries.
