“We have been ‘Truly Blessed’ with our foals this season.”

We travelled down to the Cape last week to visit a few of our mares boarding at Winterbach Stud… as well as to see four new foals!

The mares and foals are looking fantastic and we are so appreciative to Hendrik Winterbach Snr & Jnr for the professional care and interest both have for our visiting contingent. It is a risky business travelling one’s mares away for the season, and the Winterbachs continue to do an excellent job for us!

Of the 16 mares sent to Winterbach, we have already had quite a few tested in foal and are awaiting results on a few others that have been covered.

As Hendrik Snr said, “We have been ‘Truly Blessed’ with our foals this season”, and our feeling is that this is the best crop Backworth has ever had, both physically and speciman-wise… and we are extremeley excited!

Here are four new arrivals; a strapping Byword colt out of Dancing Royale, a handsome Byword colt out of Cupid’s Daughter, a leggy Kahal colt out of Gilt Edge and an elegant Crusade filly out of Forbidden Woods.

Bon Voyage to our Ladies!!

Backworth Mares depart for the Cape / Ian Todd (p)

Spring is always an exciting, yet anxious, time for any Stud Farm as the results of years of intricately calculated planning and breeding come to fruition with the arrival of the past season’s foals and the selection of the next season’s Stallions.

This year is a particularly anxious, yet exciting, time for the Backworth team as we bid farewell to a few members of our broodmare band as they embark on their journey to the fairest Cape… and to some impressive Stallion talent too!

Royal Dance for Western Winter

Western Winter (USA) - Dancing Royale (AUS)

The South African breeding industry was hit with the sad news Saturday of the loss of Lammerskraal Stud’s Champion Sire, Western Winter.

The son of Gone West has been a stalwart of South African breeding for well over a decade producing tough and durable racehorses winning at the highest level from 1000m to 3200m. Western Winter was crowned champion first-season sire of 2000/01, remaining in the upper reaches of South Africa’s sires’ tables to date. His other achievements included overall champion sire in 2002/03, 2004/05 and 2005/06 and finishing second in the sires’ table three times. He was twice sire of Horses Of The Year with Winter Solstice and What A Winter.

Western Winter’s other progeny include Yard Arm, Set Afire, Ice Cube, Roxanne, Bad Girl Runs, Swartland, Argonaut, Fair Maiden, Fearless, Nania, Warm White Night, On Her Toes, Lady Windermere, Surveyor, Silver Mist, Oracle West and Capetown Noir.

As if by command from the heavens, our beautiful Australian mare, Dancing Royale (Danehill Dancer - Asian Incline), gave birth to a really beautiful Western Winter colt early Saturday morning. The photos above show Dancing Royale and her colt foal at just 10 minutes old!
