A Chilly Western Winter

Ice Run (Western Winter - Blue Lace Agate) wins over 1400m on the Greyville Turf / Gold Circle (p)

We may be nearing the peak of our Summer season here in KwaZulu-Natal, but Friday night’s racing at Greyville sent chills down a few spines as we once again witnessed the class of a South African stallion great of times past, Western Winter.

From a Backworth perspective, all eyes were on the Tony Rivalland-trained Ice Run; a classy son of Western Winter coming back from a 76 day break following a scintillating maiden win early November.

Stepping up to the 1400m for his first time, the Backworth-bred gelding didn't disappoint as he led from pillar to post, taking a convincing win under an excellent ride from Brandon Lerena.

Making up the places were Winter Auralius, who's Dam Sire is Western Winter, and Let's Go West, also a son of Western Winter.

Congratulations to the Tony Rivalland stable and to owners Mr Cassim and Mrs Mary Liley.

Bella Miesque, a daughter of Mieque's Approval, put in a fine effort in the following race on the Greyville card to secure fourth for trainer Wendy Whitehead, whilst Thrill Factor, a five-year-old mare by Windrush, continued to do the farm proud at Fairview with a solid second over 1200m for trainer Yvette Bremner.
