One of my greatest joys as a racehorse breeder has come from visiting the planet’s great stud farms. Breeders the world over have invested billions of dollars building their shrines to the thoroughbred, and these properties attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. As beautiful as any I’ve had the privilege to know is the Backworth Stud, located in the verdant hills of Mid-Illovo, where they breed horses comparable with the best anywhere. It’s a matter of pride to us that the foundations of this magnificent farm were laid by relatives of the family that brought racing glory to Hartford, which is now part of the Summerhill estate. The spectacularly appointed homestead at Backworth is a national landmark, matched by its immaculate stables and perfectly manicured lawns and gardens. Because we’re in the trade ourselves, we know the meaning of the word “hospitality”: as hosts, Keith and Ian stand alone.
