SCANDAL
Muhtafal - Lewinsky’s Lover

Scandal is a half-sister to Var filly Caviar, a five-time winner who has placed 11 times. An immaculate damline, the third dam is Soho Secret - the dam of London News who has left a dynasty of her own through the likes of Underground Lady and Secret Pact - the latter being the third dam of Pluck, a stallion now standing at Vinery Stud in Australia.

The second KZN Breeders Series Log for two-year-olds published this week has seen the impressive Backworth Stud-bred debut winner, Scandal, moving to the head of affairs.

Scandal won easily over 1000m at Turffontein 10 February with jockey Fanie Chambers up, beating the Captain Al filly Shivering Sea, with another Muhtafal named Harmston Herald finishing in third.

The cleverly named daughter of Muhtafal, out of Lewinsky’s Lover by Jallad, sold for R375,000 at the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale and won impressively by almost three lengths on debut for trainer Corne Spies. The talented two-year-old KZN-bred is owned by Messrs F N Englezakis, D Fleischman and F van Wyk.

Scandal’s good-looking three-year-old half-brother by Miesque’s Approval, Humidor, placed on debut and has only had one start to date.

This is also the immediate family of Eton Square, King’s Gambit, Lady Brompton, Varsfontein sire Master Of My Fate and American Badger.

Scandal leads by three points from previous log leader, Just As I Said, a colt from the first crop of sire Just As Well standing at Spring Valley Stud.

189 Two-year-olds have been entered for the two Juvenile races on the KZN Breeders Race Day for a stake of R200,000, both over 1200m for the colts and fillies respectively on the Polytrack. The KZN Breeders Race Day is one of the biggest on Gold Circle’s racing calender during Champion’s Season, with a total stakes value of R2,600,000 for the day landing in the hands of the winning connections of KZN-bred racehorses.

399 Three-year-olds and up are in the running on the 3-year-old and up log; the balance of the six KZN Breeders Series races to be run on 28 June at Greyville on the polytrack over distances of 1200m, 1600m and 2000m. The races are each for a stake of R200,000 exclusively for KZN-breds - horses registered with the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme.

The KZN Breeders Premium Scheme is the only incentive of its kind in South Africa, where breeders registered with the KZN Breeders Club receive annual premiums from the stakes their KZN-bred racehorses have earned for the previous racing season. The KZN Breeders Million Mile for three and four year olds with a suitable merit rating, will prove to be the highlight of the day, however - entries for this race are excluded from below and will follow normal race entry procedures.

Thank you to the breeders, owners and trainers for the support!
