Trippi (USA) - Refined Gold by Rich Man’s Gold (USA)
If you cast your mind back to the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale you may recall an intriguing buzz surrounding a certain Backworth-bred bay filly named Spangle. Being by Trippi out of the Rich Man’s Gold mare Refined Gold, Spangle boasted an impressive pedigree and we were inundated with callers from across the country.
Refined Gold comes from an exceptional dam-line with her fourth dam being London Wall - famous for producing one of the best racehorses to eminate from South Africa, Horse Chestnut. This family’s descendants include plenty of Bold Black Type, almost too many to mention - but the likes of Cape Badger, Monyela, West Wall, Iron Curtain, and the second dam’s full-sister Sport’s Chestnut, are all present.
But the dam-line alone was not the source of all this interest.
The secret lay with broodmare sire, Rich Man’s Gold - himself by Forty Niner - and in turn sire Trippi’s paternal grandfather. This is the exact same ‘nick’ as one of the USA’s top race fillies of her time, the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes victress R Heat Lightning.
Having left the gates on just three occasions to date, Spangle hasn’t disappointed her connections. She cracked a second over 1200m on debut having pharyngitis, followed that up with a third over a too sharp 1000m and breaks her maiden now over 1400m with confidence, jockey Alec Forbes up.
Congratulations to trainer Dennis Bosch and owner Mario Ferreira… long may class prevail.
